London to Edinburgh Road Trip

If you have a car and you want to park in the car park in Melrose, you have to have cash or download an app that you can’t download from the Australian App Store. That needs to be in the what cheeses me off thread.
Not the only town/city you need to log into a parking website to park.

Is that ‘Pay by phone’if you can remember?

I was in one of the suburbs of London once in a screaming hurry to get a park. Only place I could find I had to use that app. Didn’t have mobile coverage so I had to open up Telstra roaming, ($10) download the app and then pay that way. Real hassle, but if it’s the same one, at least I’ve got it now.

My experience was in Glasgow and I think it was RingGo or directly with a website.

no I think it was Ring Go and you can’t download that on Aussie phone. Just have some small change

If you’re going that way then visiting some country pubs for an overnight stay is a fantastic experience. A lot of them have gone sort of gourmet but it’s more the atmosphere that’s memorable. @VPS may have some good suggestions

If if you make it as far west as Wells, I would thoroughly recommend the Ancient Gatehouse hotel with full window views of magnificent Wells Cathedral right in front of you.

The ancient town of Chester is another good option which is more on your route.

Small town pubs are great; the smaller the better. Watch out if staying at larger towns or a city as parking may be very difficult.

Upper and Lower Slaughter? 😊
Just hijacking this for a minute. The hotel in Wells do you remember if they had shubs or walk in showers and were there lots of tricky stairs

Yes to shub and 1 flight of narrow tricky stairs.

Maybe not then.

Remember that there are several routes to Edinburgh from London, typically one left hand side (M6 etc) and the other right hand side (M1 etc). One can be all Motorway, the others eventually takes you on to regular roads. Each has different characteristics.

Did this trip in 2018. Main purpose was visit friends in Edinburgh and navigating the trip with two children (7yo, 4yo).

Staying near Archway in London, easy to get onto the A1, we stopped in York and also visited the air museum there which exceeded expectations, then overnighted on the way there in Durham (Crowne Plaza) - Durham was enjoyable and interesting.

On the way back we did it in one hit and stayed near Heathrow for an early flight the next day.

Europcar used to have a GBP1 offer for oneways that helped them with repositioning cars. Only ad hoc routes and the car could be anything but I used it once and it was fine. I checked the link today and it seems no longer a goer
