Long-haul J experiences on MH

For those interested

Mel - KL (A330) - pretty tired product and toward the bottom end of quality spectrum, was hard to sleep. If i was just doing a return of Mel - KL i wouldnt flt with MH again based on that experience.
KL Lounge - better than expected, large lounge with plenty of space, however the overall quality of it is probably inline with a priority pass lounge so nothing special. its comfortable enough due to the large size and i didnt feel crowded at all.
KL - CDG (A380) - nice big open cabin, i just fit (185cm) lying down, the seats do go fully flat and i had a decent sleep (seems alot quieter than A330 in the A380 upper deck). I like the A380 and would use it again if they flew them to Melbourne.

I found the overall experience ok, however if you gave me 102k back (= cost in points for this route for two people) i would add another 34,000points and fly with Singapore airlines to Amsterdam - which is what we are doing on the way back. I have previously flown with Singapore and they are better airline from the plane, to lounge etc. I also think Singapore is a better and more manageable stopover city if you start thinking about stopovers etc as part of your journey.

If MH starts flying an A380 from Melb - KL then id consider flying again as the product is satisfactory for the points required and large amount of availability.

However if they dont, and Singapore for instance has seats free id pay the extra.

Wow, those 330's are hardly that old. I wonder what is going wrong if they are being labelled as tired.

It's just the seat, mannej. Angled and clunky with very little storage space. It was really a bad choice on MH's part to get these seats. The A330s themselves aren't old or tired. The economy seats are well designed actually. Good choice there.

Agree the MH J seats from SYD/MEL to KUL are woeful. But I've never really been able to sleep on the SQ a380 J seats either. Just a weird angle and I always seem to find myself with one leg dangling off the side as I can never get comfortable lying on my back with both legs up.

Will be flying SYD-KUL-CDG and return soon, my first ever long-hauls on MH. Can't wait! :)

Just completed four legs ADL to KL, KL to LHR CDG to KL and KL to BNE.
The best way to describe it was inconsistent. even when comparing like for like eg on A380 day flight between KL and LHR no slippers, A380 day flight CDG to KL, was provided slippers. Just one example but every flight had different serving patterns etc. I think there must be new and old 330's they are using ADL to KL had new IFE system, KL to BNE was a much older 330 and you had to access the on demand IE though an old IFE program. Seats on 330 awful, and to be honest A380 not much better. You needed to be seating completely upright for tray table to work which was a bit odd. Food was so so. Desserts were always great, entrees mixed bunch and generally main courses were the worst. Generous with drinks at mealtimes, but never proactive outside this time. Any requests met promptly. Would fly again - but only if price is right. One more think to note, any flight after 9am is now a lunch service, a bit odd but the satay soon gets you in lunch mode!!

I thought the A330 only had one product. They had a terrible regional 330 product but I thought this was gone the way of the do-do.

Just completed SYD-KUL-CDG-KUL-SYD and overall I was satisfied with my first long-haul J experience on MH.

Service: Good on 3 out of the 4 sectors. Sure, MH FAs may lack the polish of SQ particularly in the delivery but they were warm and personable.
Food: Very good. Better than expected actually. Chef-on-Call worked flawlessly.
IFE: Selection below average. Not many movie options both in terms of latest releases and classics. Definitely cannot compare with SQ, EK, CX or BA. TV options were OK with multiple episodes of popular shows loaded, though once again cannot beat the other airlines. The hardware (screen size and quality, remote) was perfectly adequate.
Seat: Angled lie-flat on the A333 was what it is - not the most comfortable for sleep but OK for lounging. Contrary to some reports the A380 seats are completely flat and perfectly comfortable. Mattress covers for the seat were provided for the seat on all sectors for bed mode but hardly anyone used them. Blankets were very soft and smooth to the touch.
Amenities: Black zip-around Tumi pouch containing three Clarins skincare products, hair brush/comb, socks, eye shades, toothbrush and toothpaste, and mouthwash. Slippers available on request. Aigner toiletries in the washrooms.

Same here, I thought MH only had new A333s now.

They only have new A330-300s. Those old ones left the fleet early last year, IIRC.

I wonder whether they just put new seats on old aircraft, this one was definitely different to the other 330 in the fleet

There is a lot of talk about the seats being tired, and comparing them to some other premium airlines, but MH IMO is only middle of range, and should be compared that way.

I've flown them in J a lot this year and I can't complain. I picked up a TPE-KUL-MEL for just over $1000 in J, and that was only marginally more than QF in Y. I flew them from BKK, and the price was comparable to Jetstar Business, and they are streets ahead of that (except the reduced SC's and points).

I'm back flying with them to BKK in 5 weeks, one day flight, not night, looking forward to the Guava juice already! :)

Does anyone know if MH are now providing mattresses (similar to what QF does) to give extra padding on the business class seats on their A380 and A330?

No mattresses on my CDG-KUL or KUL-BNE

I didn't think so. I'd just read somewhere that they may have started providing it. They just have it for the First class seats on the A380.
