Long pants/lower leg coverings on flights?

I’m pretty sure it’s from advice I read here, years ago, but I always wear long pants or leg coverings on flights, and don’t change into Pjs until after take off. Not due to some belief in decorum, I don’t really care what other people wear, but I thought it was for safety reasons- esp if you need to take the emergency slide.

Sitting here in departures I see a lot of bare lower legs so I wonder how many others are like me vs wearing whatever fits the climate best (I.e. shorts or shorter skirts in the heat).

I only used to do that ‘cos I thought there was still kinda/sorta an implied dress code leftover from 50-odd years ago where only the well-heeled could afford to fly more than maybe once in a life-time so everyone dressed-up to some degree.
Now I don’t really care & “it depends” … it can be cold onboard sometimes, and even if you want shorts in the terminal long pants are often desirable if you’re trapped for hours barely moving (a SYD-MEL flight notsomuch … all the time spent moving around terminals & getting to/from terminals is more important than onboard-time with a short flight).

I also rarely travel in J and the thought of getting changed on those toilet floors leaves me a bit “ick” so don’t change into PJ’s even if they’re available.

I always travel in jeans or trousers. Its just the way I feel comfortable. I leave the shorts in the luggage for use after arrival if weather permits. I leave the kilt and mini-skirt at home

So the safety aspect is not really part of my consideration because full leg covering is just the way I prefer to travel anyway.

I don't want to be washing Mr Katie's cycling kit while travelling!

Though his tour operators have for his cycling tours to France and Blegium.

I always wear jeans, but that's just because I find I get cold on the plane, especially if it's a long haul flight or I'm seated in an exit row.

Living in CNS, shorts and T shirts all the time unless its cold at the other end.
Dressed nice but, not footy shorts and singlet.

I have been guilty of wearing thongs on a DOM plane in Hawaii, my hiking shoes died, so did hikes in my sneakers, which then got muddy and wet so thongs (flip flops) on the plane...security was easy as, and many locals were wearing "slippas" too.

As for the slide I'll live with some slide burns rather than die on board.

If INT J I will usually have jeans on, never wear the PJ's, but keep them for the hotel room on the trip as I dont have any winter PJ's in my climate. Throw them out after trip and hopefully get another set on way back.

Agree 100%, that's why I have cupboards full of airline PJ's. Even my kids and other relatives have had enough of them.

In pjs on long haul.

1050 flights and haven’t had to use an emergency escape slide yet! If I do, I’ll accept some friction burns (if they happen) to have got out safely.

I tend to cover up when flying be it jeans, suit/casual pants and long sleeve shirts. This is not due to comfort but over years of flying I have been seated next to other PAX that do not fit into their seat and I dislike been rubbed skin to skin by the over weight and sweaty types be it male or female. For international flights I normally travel in J and am BYO PJs and slippers and will change into these post take off for comfort.

WN crew are allowed to wear shorts. Can’t be that big of a safety issue.

I don’t give a flying coughk, I dress for comfort. Shorts and thongs (footwear variety) if the climate allows.

If I have to bail out and mess up my legs, so be it. If the high and mighty anti shorts parade were so worried, they wouldn’t be drinking the champagne either.

With 40.1 million flights forecast this year and only 30 emergency evacuations per year … I’d say wear pants so we don’t have to look at your legs … but safety really needn’t be a consideration.

Very hot in airplane cabins - especially J, I always wear light shorts. Why dress for something which has a 0.000001% chance of happening? And I'm sure you will go down the slide just fine anyway.

Always long pants for me ... I freeze on planes. Damn my internal thermostat set at central QLD temperatures.
