Long wait for refund for cancelled reward flights Qantas - a common experience?

Hi All,

Just reviewing out travel plans to Europe booked for May , I have booked my Europe tickets using Qantas points all booked under classic reward flights . There are 3 different booking reference nos. as i booked them as the classic award tickets became available as below
Leg 1 Mel-Sin- Mel
Leg 2 Singapore-Doha- Vienna
Leg 3 Paris-Dubai-Singapore
I understand cancellation charges are 6000 points per passenger , does this mean i will be charged 6000X3 points per passenger or juts 6000 points per passenger for all 3 cancellations.
Can we pay cash instead of points for the cancellations? does anyone know how much do 6000 points translate to in terms of AUD

Thanks

If humans can be kept out of the reward booking cancellation process then refunds can be quicker.

Sunday 6th Dec ~5pm, using www.qantas.com/yourbooking I cancelled a CBR-SYD flight online. Six days later the 8K was back in the account and yesterday the refund of ~$50 in +++ showed up.
Funny- seems to be quicker the passenger decides to cancel than when Qantas does!

Just as an update- after some intervention by a very kind soul on here, Qantas suddenly moved fast and I've received both my points and cash back yesterday.

And like a cow who keeps running against the electric fence, I'm in the process to look at flights for Easter right now

I had an award/revenue ticket which I cancelled in March. Voucher never happened, and several emails before the money side was turned into a voucher. The voucher had disappeared when I went to use it and when I again asked what happened and where’s the points I was told QF IT is a big problem with vouchers and it was easier to refund. So I went for that and had the points and money back two days later. Seems if you have a nine month old problem you do get priority

With every state and territory border closing to NSW within a day or so they will have a huge workload with refunds, and frayed nerves it seems. Never have so many walls gone up so fast.

cheers skip

VA is offering a status match. Just saying...
Too bad that they got the worst Business class over the Tasman, by a far stretch. So not really an alternative. I do fly Air NZ more and more often but find their frequent flyer scheme appalling compared to QF. So all not ideal, unfortunately.

Cancelled a flight back in April (only to Sydney and on points) and finally received the tax refund last week. Only took 8 months!!

Had my awards world the world flight cancelled and asked for the refund of points and taxes( $3k) in Mid July. Points got refunded with 4 weeks. I tried multiple calls over the proceeding months to FF call centre with no luck. Also submitted 2 complaints in November with no reponse even though they provide 2 bus days then forwarded those email to Alan in late November after which i got a email to say it would be refunded and then a woman contacted we to check details and got the money back within a week. Disappointing that it took that action to finally get my refund after 5 months . Still awaiting for a refund off Cebu Pacific Air from March though- at least I’ve had a couple of emails updating me on the progress .

That does seem to be a common theme amongst Qantas customers. Stick with them to lock in LTG, then out of there like a shot! Speaks volumes.
I would have kept flying with except for the disgusting treatment from them over refunds.

twice they have told me in writing the refunds have been processed and yet no funds.

they are simply trying to bolster their cash flow by holding on to customers money.

they cancelled the flights and by holding onto funds when refunds have been requested is illegal.

After losing Platinum before the covid virus, and having to cancel my points + cash booking for a April flight, I had to use the normal telephone line. I gave up waiting after 30-40 minutes, and used Facebook-messenger . This way proved very quick and not too painless. My refund took a few weeks...but no card fees refunded. Another Facebook message , and the card fees refunded that week. It seems though for others, the call centre wait is purposely extended, to retain cash in the bank...at the customers expense.

I went to cancel a reward booking of 99000 points + $239 taxes/fees and there was only an option for credit, not refund. Thing is when it went to the confirm the cancellation it said that it will issue a credit voucher for $1000.

Did not agree, will now have to call to get my points and taxes back.

All I can suggest is you ditch Qantas and change carriers.
As a United MP member I just cancelled a points ticket SYD-HND-YVR for Feb21 when the SYD-HND leg was descheduled. I confidently expect the points and taxes will reappear in my accounts within 72 hours.

I booked flights to Japan around last November 2019 for May 2020. This time I used Flight centre only because I had credit from a previous price drop to use (not much as it seems they still take a cut of that). Was actually a hassle as I found cheaper flights they they were quoting and had to email screen shots of what I had seen etc - as they could not even find prices as cheap as mine.!
Originally when all this happened was offered a credit - as everyone else. But around August get an email saying I might be eligible for a refund. Seems the only reason for it being allowed as my
flight times and details etc had been changed - before flights cancelled altogether.
Anyway early Sept I applied for a refund - and of course still waiting for it.
So its actually over a year since I paid. As least I know if others still waiting also I guess hopefully
will get it eventually - but you really wonder why it takes so long? I was told at least around 13 weeks but it seems way longer than that now.

Has this question been answered yet? 🤣

Sigh, Qantas, your IT remains a marvel of the modern age.

I finally got my refund posted to my account on 20 November. Today, 29 December, I get an e-mail from Qantas happily telling me that my refund for that booking ref has been processed, and it may take some time for it to be credited by my bank.

Plonkers.
