Cheapest I can see to SYD leaving later tonight is QF at AUD1224.95

QF 94 N 15JUL LAX B MEL 2 2330 0820+2 E0/388
QF 422 N 17JUL MEL 1 SYD 3 1000 1125 E0/763 1855

*might have to call a TA to book this, from SYD I can't get any websites to quote in the past anymore. Leaving on the 16th there is CZ at AUD1387 or QF at AUD1430 booked on the Expedia US website*

Yes, LAX to SYD via MEL QF94 leaving LAX at 2330 arriving MEL 0820 connecting onto QF422 to SYD leaving at 1000 arriving 1125

I don't have all the tools but you have the following airline options:

Non-stop
- Qantas
- Virgin
- Delta
- United

One-stop
- Air New Zealand
- Air Pacific
- Via Hawaii (lots of combinations here)

You are leaving it a bit late to get cheap flights I'd imagine.

Use a site like Expedia, skyscanner or Zuji to see what the cheapest is and run with that. One way flights are not always the cheapest proposition.✈

Good point - it may be possible to get a return cheaper (it up to you whether you fly back).

You will struggle to book online for flights departing within 24 hours. For example, China Southern will only accept online bookings for Wednesday onwards. You should try and give their LA office a call (323-6538088) if grussellt's suggestion is workable for you. ITA is showing an Air Canada flight (LAX-Vancouver-Sydney) departing Sunday night (the 15th) at 2330, which will get you to Sydney sooner. Pricing at a little over US$1600. You will have to call them (1-888-2472262) to have any chance of getting this.
