Decided I need to get a VPN for travels next year. Looking at Nord, Express, Shark, Pure etc but not sure I want to buy 3 yr subscription upfront. Grateful any recommendations.

Check out this thread. I use Nord and they had a great Shopback deal at one stage so keep an eye out for that

I use VPN Unlimited.

US$39 for a lifetime subscription - might be the lifetime of the company though, but I've been using it for four years so I've gotten the value out of it.

Alternatively, if you just wanted VPN for a Windows 10 laptop, anyone can get it for free, though it blocks peer-to-peer.

Regards,
Renato

Most of the info here s†ill applies

IMO you can't go wrong no matter who you choose.

But if you plan for use in China - I'd suggest spinning up your own VPN to skirt around the blocks.

If you use 'microsoft services' like Azure, they don't like NordVPN and maybe VPNs in general. My Uni runs off MS ( Somehow, I don't understand it) and I have to turn off my NordVPN to use the email and any Uni service.

This confirmed to me by the Uni IT services.

I don't understand how, and it might be UTAS specific, but be aware if you are really plugged into MS.

I previously used Express VPN, but moved to Nord earlier this year because of a good deal on offer. I have been happy with Nord, but Express VPN was fine as well, the change really came down to price for me.

I recently purchased a VPN for security and did a bit of reading prior. Pricewise, they're all on sale all the time, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Basically you want to consider two things
1) Security - you wan't things to be secure and the VPN company not to keep logs of your activity
2) Speed - your searches are routed from your network to the server in another country. This can cause significant speed delays

Generally the common (heavily advertised) VPNs score poorly on both. NOrd/Express are known to provide poor speeds ongoing when you sign up for 3 year or lifelong deals. There have also been known about passing on details regarding gamers hacking, keeping logs of access (which have been hacked etc.). While these might not appear as big things, basically it's your privacy being open to everyone.

If you just want to watch US netflix, I'm sure nord is fine though. Heres a good reference

FWIW - I went with AirVpn. got a years access for $50 AUD.

I use Nord and only have two issues:
1) I have to turn it off to update Apps on my Samsung phone.
2) When it updates or you restart the phone/computer/tablet you have to reenter the password. I have a 20+ character password with symbols/letters/numbers, upper and lower case etc, and it's a real pain to remember.

Thanks all. Will try and find cheapest 3 yr or LT plan with no logging so if company folds or speed slows down after 30 day trial won't be a big deal.

Why don't you use a password manager.
I have some incredibly complex passwords and don't remember any of them.

Definitely recommend Express VPN. We used it for the 3 year we were in China 😀

I have used ExpressVPN in China for a few years. There has been a bit of cat and mouse with the CN cyber police recently but the have got around them each time. Works well. Cheapish. Good online chat and updates to work around the Chinese.

For my “at home” VPN needs I use PIA on yearly subscriptions about $50/year.
But when I’m travelling I always use ExpressVPN as I’ve found them to be the best and most reliable, esp for China. But also everywhere else.

I typically travel for 2-4 weeks, 2-3 times a year so I activate a monthly ExpressVPN subscription for when I’m away and cancel when I get back. It’s the most expensive option for sure, but for me sill significantly cheaper overall than an upfront 12-24 month ExpressVPN purchase... when I don’t need the ExpressVPN level of VPN the rest of the time.

I have just given TunnelBear the flick as they no longer worked with Foxtel, Netflix or BBC Viewer for me. I have just started with Express VPN and have had no trouble.
