Los Angeles International Airport Is Renaming Its Terminals And Gates

Now, the airport is planning on changing some of the names, and the changes are as follows:
  • Combining Terminal 1 and Concourse 0 to create a consolidated Terminal 1
  • Combining Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 for a consolidated Terminal 2
  • Renaming Terminal B (TBIT), which includes MSC and Bradley West Gates, to Tom Bradley Terminal 3
  • Combining Terminal 7 and Terminal 8 to create a consolidated Terminal 7
  • Conversion of all gate numberings to a new gate numbering system. The gate renumbering shall be an alphanumeric system consistently airport-wide, starting over at each boarding area.

Sounds OK except for the up-coming people-mover stop numbering.

Yeah, all the bloggers cottoned on to this X post by "numble":

The texts is almost universally cut and pasted by these 'bloggers'.

Whomever is behind this numble account peruses contract and other online data relevant to LAX transit and stumbled across this:

In any case, earlier this year I had a multi hour transit, so I walked airside from TBIT to T0(Gate "9") then all they way around to T9. Certainly got the steps up.

The changes make sense, especially combining T2 & T3 as they are now essentially the same space, although with two piers.

Yes, especially now they’re interconnected. Clever way to free up “T3” and repurpose it!

As an aside, that diagram is the first I’ve seen of the new “T8” (was going to be T9).

It's been on the plans for a while. They aren't able to start work on it until they complete some current projects which allow them to move the "eagle's nest" remote terminal.

But odd then that AA will still be using a fairly “remote” terminal to their main ops at T4?

Don’t know why they didn’t consolidate T4 & 5.

From what I can tell, AA is getting preferred access to more gates in TBIT, which will allow them to move more mainline flights out of T5, then move the eagle flights into T5 (which the remote terminal gates are already considered to be part of).
The original plan was to have AA move out of the remote terminal by the end of this year. Not sure if that's been delayed.

Probably less disruption? - the old T3 had been out of action for a while - despite reopening…🤷‍♂️

So who actually takes up the T8 (aka T9) gates?

Suspect it's because they still have distinct head houses (or check-in facilities) which for most pax is the key difference of a terminal.

Are they still distinct though? Last time I was there I recall them being agnostic as to which terminal you checked in from.

Certainly there is only one Flagship First in T4 that serves all three terminals.

The Flagship check in is at the East end of T4, nearly T5. Other than that there are separate T4 and T5 check in areas; I presume they allow one to check luggage for flights departing either. (Or indeed, the eAAgles nest).

The rebuilt T2 and T3 currently have a single check in area for DL.

No issues checking in at Flagship First for a flight from the T5 nest this past week.
