Lots of Unhappy Vegemites on delayed QF 11 SYD-LAX

No information if these were maintenance related. Things break....
I did write "appear" so sure don't know for sure.. there have been an unfortunate number of incidences in a short period of time.

Of course UA have a huge fleet so things will happen

My point, which is now way OT, is that some media have linked all this stuff to Boeing and the current issues there. I personally feel that is wrongly assigning blame.

then having to fly an evening transcon domestic to the US East Coast in “coach”
Had the exact same thing happen to us coming off a delayed QF11 about a year and a half ago - missed J connection to MCO, ended up on Delta in economy at the back of the bus where our row was literally across the aisle from the toilet/s. Was a long ~5 hours.

It’s a big call to “cancel” a flight for engineering reasons as it’s an extravagant cost to shuffle PAX off to hotels and the like
Back in 2018, we were boarded the QF127 A330 for SYD>HKG for a 9:30am departure.
Everyone on-board all doors closed, all equipment has moved away from the plane.
~9:30am Pilot announces small delay due to technical issue, once engineers sign off we'll commence.
~10:00am push back, taxi to runway. Hold for about 10mins. Pilot announces tech issue, need to return to gate.
~11:00am Still working on Issue, awaiting engineering sign off, should be departing soon
~12:00am push back again
~12:30pm holding on taxiway this time, pilot announces return to gate
~1:30pm Pilot announces major issue flight unlikely to leave. Awaiting arrival of another A330 later that afternoon to operate QF127

(another reason not to rush into PJ's folks!)

I was in Economy, there was a lady across the aisle who frustrated but wasn't venting. I invited her up to the lounge to wait it out.

Finally about 6pm we departed, on a completely different A330, but all in the same assigned seats, except for a few who didn't come back.. This was at the time we should've been arriving into HKG. And of course by the time we did arrive into HK, the airport was dead quiet, the HK Airport express had stopped running.. It was a long day.

Well
First time ever for me
A Fringe show had a half hour delay while fixing technical issues. We thought it would never take off !

On a fully laden A380 likely hundreds and thousands to transport and provide beds for the night
And then there’s the logistics of getting them to their destination the next day when the next flight/s is full.

However, safety is the highest priority so PAX ought be grateful it’s taken seriously
Even though I'm grateful and got two free nights at a Courtyard Marriott it just shows how big of a problem there is for the company to be fixing the plane for two consecutive days (after we checked in and were awaiting boarding). Leads me to wonder what if they had not cancelled that day and went ahead anyways to cut costs or for PR purposes and they lost their bet and the flight turns into another LATAM or even worse?:eek:

The experience I had with QF flight cancellations preCOVID is that they only find accommodation for you if you are coming from another destination (ie connecting flight) or registered home address is not in the same city as the departure airport. This meant easily half or more pax were told to go home, never mind the rescheduled departure may be less than 10 hours away (by the time they tell you it’s cancelled… 3 hours after the original scheduled time)

is that still the case or were I being conned by QF customer service 5 years ago?
Just relocate you and your entire family to the middle of Alice Springs. Simples!

Good point
I’m just a bit cheesed off having to spend the rest of the day at Los Angeles and then having to fly an evening transcon domestic to the US East Coast in “coach” - that appears to be the best option if I want to avoid an overnight stay in the city of angels. Still it does make me reconsider several transpacific flights in the next 6 months if they are on an A 380! They do seem to be getting old I’m the teeth!
Make the most of it and go for an In'n'Out burger and a nice walk on the Santa Monica Pier. There are worse places to have to fill in a day.

The same thing is happening with the LATAM 787. Everyone screaming Boeing's fault when it is more likely a LATAM maintenance issue.
Whilst I think it’s a media frenzy with UA and the 777s (the wheel is unusual, but not unknown, and only really an issue for the car owner), and the hydraulic system that brought the aircraft back to Sydney, is a case of ‘happen’s (I had that twice on the 767), I’m not so sure about the 787. We don’t know enough about it yet, but the entire scenario is one that should not be able to happen, irrespective of LATAM, so unless it was finger trouble, I expect it will point back to Boeing.

Thank you for your thoughts .
An update , I arrived round 0900 and got thru immigration by 0945.
Too late for the connect.
On the flight , the purser approached me and said QF had contacted them about a later connection to Florida as my booked connection would not work !
Unfortunately , they had not correctly booked it and it took a couple of hours at United trying to convince them that i had a ticket - eventually Qantas came thru and they fixed it and i only departed LAX 3 hours later than expected.
To be fair , I'm sure that if the new connection was on American, the process would have gone much smoother
so good on QF for offering me a flight on a non OW carrier.
So all ended up well in the end!

And try to be helpful to two people wearing pink on roller blades who seems to be lost. Our future rides on you:eek::eek::eek:

One of my party is/was returning to MEL on tonight’s QF 4 ( 20 march) . He’s been notified that the a/c will be at least 4 hours late departing JFK !
Lucky I’m not going til the weekend. Otherwise, I’ d be feeling pretty unlucky.

Maybe qantas has long memories of the comedian with Vegemite on his fingers who opened the toilet door in flight and requested a hostess to bring toilet paper!

Hostess? Wow, that’s going back a while.
