Loud typing in lounges - rude or not?

I'd be interested to know what everything thinks... if someone is typing loudly/constantly on their laptop in a lounge, would you consider it to be rude?

In a lounge? Anything too loud (i.e. intrusive) is rude. IMO.

If its you typing loudly - then its outrageous!!

Maybe they're just trying to show off that they have a fancy new laptop??

Hmmm, unless you want to buy the lounge out for yourself i guess there has to be some level of putting up with/tolerating others...

Were they thumping the keys or was it just an old (or newish) loud clacky keyboard???

I've got a theory that anything over ~100wpm is irritating. The person next to me won't stop the excessive typing. I've tried speaking to them but that didn't work. Can't move seats and my Bose QC 15's were stolen this week. Argh!

It depends.

If they're in an area where the other computers are, or a designated business area then not rude at all.

If it is a designated quiet area then maybe.

After all the lounge is a work area for many of us and if someone is sitting there typing away and making no other noise then I really don't see the problem.

However, it is all situational so it is really a call for the actual circumstances.

Around the other computers or in the "noisy" part of the lounge, I would be fine with it, but if its in the quiet part of the lounge, or the no Mobile Phone area then i would get pissed off pretty fast...

Hadn't even really noticed different designated zones... But yes if there are some then they should probably use the correct one... You could suggest it to them (as you seem to imply you have), the next step i suppose is to 'accidently' drop a plate of food or a drink on the said machine, or close to it, with an apologetic 'Oooops'...

The problem is they might be an even bigger DYKWIA in their own imagination... Lounges and other places can be full of such people to which the correct response is probably DILLIGAF...

Back in August a guy had his mobile phone and a few other things stolen from BNE J lounge.

They had him on camera but the AFP officer warned me to watch my MacBook Pro

Stealing from the lounge happens a bit more than we know about.

Some laptop keyboards are louder than others. My work laptop keyboard is significantly louder than my Macbook Pro. I am mindful not to slam the keys too hard, but sometimes this is difficult if I'm about to board and I need to attend to an urgent work email.

I wouldn't really care about the loud typing. I have quite an "authoritative" type, and would seriously get the sh!ts with anyone that complains to me about my typing in a lounge setting - I would probably tell them to piss off. Mind you, I have a macbook pro, so my max typing sound levels are relatively minimal.

Keep in mind that there are other sounds in a lounge - like plates, cutlery, shoes on the tiles... so the sound of someone typing would generally blend in with the other noises in the lounge, no?

Seriously though, sorry to hear about the theft - that is absolutely horrible, hope you're able to relocate the items if not sort something out.
