Loud typing in lounges - rude or not?

JohnK,

Have you considered telecommuting, even on an ad-hoc basis? The noisiest sound I hear at the moment is a lyre bird.

Regards,
russ

I strongly disagree with some of the opinions in this thread. I'm not going to say which ones.

Oh go on, enlighten us.

You outlined one of the reasons I left an open plan environment a couple of years ago. I'm still dumbfounded by the logic of moving people from offices to save money, into an environment that is going to kill productivity.

There are benefits to open plan, and as someone who has known nothing else (I came onto the working scene as the awful partitioned prisons were being phased out), I can't say that I hate it. It creates an open atmosphere and improves team work and collaboration.

In saying that though, there are basic considerations that you need to keep in mind, such as NOT eating Tuna at your desk nor anything else that may be offensive to noses in near proximity [e.g. Curry]. Typing loudly isn't what I would consider to be one of those unwritten rules.

Which ever warped mind thinks that open plan environments are productive is seriously kidding themselves.

I feel that those who are strongly against open plan, are those that grew up in a workplace where offices and floor to ceiling partitions were the norm - and therefore grew accustomed to privacy and a level of independence in the workplace. Like everything in business, change is the norm and we all need to embrace it - change is the only constant in the workplace. Perhaps you would be an ideal candidate for working from home? ;)

Sorry I don't see the need to offend anybody over this issue

When it is done as a pure cost saving measure, involves small teams that have already bonded that contribute significant income that subsidises a substantial part of the rest of the business. It tends to destroy morale and productivity, IME.

What? Going soft in your old age medhead? :D

Amazing how a thread regarding the noise associated with typing can go this long. As I see it it is a by-product (sp?) of the age we live in and pretty well can't be avoided short of isolating ones self. Obvious distractions such as excessively loud conversations or speakers associated with a laptop/i-device can be toned down easily enough but typing noise???

No not at all. If I'm going to offend someone I'll do it properly over a big issue. (oops have I given away my opinion? ;))

I dare not read this whole thread in case it makes my blood boil - but seriously!!

If this is the only thing you have to complain about in relation to airline lounges, you need to find a new hobby. Knitting might be a better use of your time.

Actually knitting needles click and clack together so maybe crocheting would be better.

That would be a brilliant idea although I do not think it is likely to happen. :-|

3 beers/ wines take the edge off most 'annoying' lounge behaviours.

how true...seeing how alot of the talk on AFF revolves around drinking...personally I think we are better
off drinking and chilling out in the lounges than worrying about noisemakers and personal issues.

Maybe as a group we are just a little more aware of our environment. Let's face it, as a group, we are, how can I put it .. A bit intense.. That's why we notice so much around ourselves.

That's why they invented comfort food, teas / coffee & alcohol in comfortable environments, and spa treatment if you're lucky, as a perfect lead up to a flight for us.:D

Unfortunately the nobs in the executive positions of my department have decided that our coughpy old govy building will go open plan progressively to standardise with current govy policy (they should knock the damn thing down, not rearrange it!!) although you can be sure the big wigs won't be in open plan arrangements.... So i will seriously be thinking about any way to work from home...

Have to say one of the most annoying things i have had to put up with is being stuck in an office with an old geezer marking time till retirement and having to listen to him slurping his tea all day and smacking his lips while chewing his chewing gum after each time he ducked out for a smoke... Bodily noises etc, such as chewing with mouth open etc, really can annoy me, so maybe we could hold off on the tea slurping thanks!!! :)

Oi!! Enough with the old geezer & edentate images!! Will have you know that I don't usually make snacking noises. Maybe a little. And just a quiet little slurp occasionally to savour some coffee or sticky with some of the lovely pav, timed perfectly for just after my spa session. Eyes at half mast.

I do hope the pav is on the current menu again.

I hate the noise I make does that count? :p

I have long since learned to live in my own little world so, other than screaming children, there is little that bothers me in the lounge.

If I read the January travel thread correctly, the evil initiater of this thread is today & for the next few, enjoying some various lounges. Wonder if he'll give us some feedback on if he heard sounds differently!!

;) funny - no more clickidy clicks on today's adventures. Also nobody to share the day with except my seatmate who is a 'frequent flyer who travels a lot - 3 return flights to NZ each year'.

Also was my first day flying air NZ.

Perhaps you best join me in telecommuting to work! ;)
