I'm heading up to Sydney for the day on Saturday in order to see the Harry Potter exhibition at The Powerhouse. My mum is coming with me so we can make it a bit of a girls day out, and I'm after suggestions for where to have lunch.

We'll arrive in the city around 10, and are due at The Powerhouse at 2pm. Anywhere worth eating that won't cost us an arm and a leg, and can be reached on foot or by public transport?

We'll also have a couple of spare hours after the exhibition before we need to head back to the airport.

Not sure where the powerhouse is in relation to the city, as I generally don't venture far from the work boundaries.

Anyway I highly recommend Encasa which is on Pitt st from memory. Fantastic food at a good price.

Din tai fung is also good but munitalP will disagree due to it becoming rather pricey.. It's in world square.

Powerhouse Museum is in Darling Harbour. China town is a pretty easy walk. As is Encasa on Pitt St just near the corner with Goulburn St.

I like the Pumphouse Bar which is in Darling Harbour area sort of near the Powerhouse. But it might be a bit expensive. Pizzas $16.50, burgers $20 to $24.

That kind of pricing is fine, just want to avoid meals that are in the region of $40 or more :D

Thanks for the suggestions, I shall check them out.

Darling Harbor is nice but can be expensive, there are lots of nice places around Hay Market, China Town, Newtown and the like which aren't as expensive as Darling Harbor and are only a short taxi ride away.

Go for a walk along coughle Bay Wharfe and you'll find heaps of awesome places where you'd get change from $40 for a main.

Not too far away from Powerhouse is Glebe point road, some good value places to eat there.

Pumphouse would be say 5-7minutes walk to the Powerhouse so one of the closest restaurants there. However there is not much scenary or views from that restaurant and I would recommend going to a restaurant around Darling Harbour (15minutes), coughle Bay (15minutes) or even King St Wharf which is a bit further away (20-25minutes walk to the PM).

I walk past coughle Bay most days to/from work/home so any of those restaurants are good with good Darling Habour views esp. on a nice sunny day. Depending on what you are craving for, if Asian head to Chinta Ria - temple of love or The Malaya at King St Wharf, both of which are my on my fave asian restaurant list. If you're keen on Italian, then head downstairs Chinta Ria and dine at Baia - The Italian, great food & great views. If you're after meat and lots of it, then Hurricanes in Darling Harbour or The Meat & Wine Co near iMax. Otherwise, casual lunch dining can be found at Pontoon Bar, next door to Baia, with their $10 lunch menus (think burger & chips, steak sandwich & chips, salads etc).

If the day is sunny, dining at a restaurant with a view of the water is a must!

Great suggestions so far.

I would say that if you find yourself down at King St. Wharf then its worth stopping past The Loft for a coughtail too. It is above Bungalow 8, at the very end of King St. Wharf.

Unfortunately public transport to/from Darling Harbour isn't amazing but there is a tram that runs from right next to the Powerhouse that will bring you into Central station. You can use this to make the short journey into Haymarket, Chinatown or to Encasa as has been suggested already.

Another suggestion which isn't too far away (and a good choice if the weather isn't very nice) would be Crown St., Surry Hills. You would need to walk/tram to central station and then a bus from there for 3 or 4 stops. This street has heaps of great pubs and plus a good number of quality restaurants.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I think we will be planning to spend most of our day around the Darling Harbour area; we've been to Sydney several times to have no need to rush around and see things.

We'll be catching the train from the airport, then will wander in the direction of Darling Harbour, have a look around, then stop for lunch. Gotta wander down to the Powerhouse for 2pm entry, then probably back up to the harbour for a drink or two overlooking the water before we catch the train back to the airport.

The exhibition is great (not as easy to absorb everything with a 3 year old in tow).

The rest of the museum seems in a state of transition a bit - I think it will look completely different in a few months.

Except it's only a short 5 minute walk from the Powerhouse to Haymarket - there's an overhead bridge that takes you right there (follow the signs to the monorail). Not worth waiting for the light rail.

But yes, it's splendidly convenient for getting to Central. I get the light rail almost every day as I live near the Jubilee Park stop.
