Made any travel mistakes lately?

As many will know, you can only book a limited way ahead for European train travel, usually between 60 and 90 days out. I was waiting for a Budapest-Vienna Railjet journey to open up, and went through the process of putting in the dates, pulling up the booking and then seeing that I was a day out. Reset the search, and somehow failed to see the "month" was now wrong, went ahead paid for it, and then saw my second mistake, on a non-refundable fare. Oh well, it was only €80.

i know better than this and knew better at the time too.

Anyway, I arrived late into Caracas after a long day and delayed flights. I was pretty tired and got into a unmarked taxi. Once I realised that there were two of them I knew I was in trouble.

fortunately they actually took me to my hotel. They took all of my money, but hey...

I guess the lesson be extra aware when you're tired.

Still not sure I follow :(

Anything you can get on QF award you can get on AA. AA won't show CX on line, but easily bookable by phone. Unless you mean you already booked your one way fare to asia and have no points left on AA and are trying to get home via QF points or revenue fares? Have you considered cancelling the AA outbounds and using the points to book the returns? Then perhaps use your QF platinum to request award availability for the more difficult ones?

There are other ways to get home - JQ, even ScootBiz fares. They had ScootBiz ex BKK for as low as TBH13000.
Apologies for confusion.

I booked 5-6 outbound trips using AA miles mainly on QF127 then CX/RJ to BKK as these were easy to book online. It is not so easy to book the reverse trip online (I really struggled to get the AA website to give me the desired BKK-HKG-SYD as opposed to BKK-SYD which I don't like) and also I wanted to stretch the business class experience to as many trips as possible.

For the inbound trips I have used QFF points in economy or purchased one way revenue airfares cheaply.

I have a had look at Scoot and Air Asia and by the time I add on luggage, golf clubs and seat selection I am up to $600-$700 and for an extra hundred or so I may as well book economy on a real airline.

Booked me and the wife into a business hotel in Chuncheon, Sth Korea as it was a last minute booking. Turns out business hotel in that part of Korea means "business". The giant tub of lube next to the tv and the pack of condoms given at check in gave it away. ;)

This is gold.

Travel in so much as points pay for flights.
Recently put $32,000 through a credit card that has a $20,000 cap. Oh well, there go 18,000 points.

Have only just realised it now...
July/August went to London on SQ with Velocity card linked. First trip from BNE-SIN, got there and saw my points balance only went to 367 or something small like this and no SC's and thought "WTF". Then saw on the monitor in changi all the codeshare airlines for our flight to london and the VA codeshare wasn't coming up so went to counter to put my Krisflyer number in instead.

So had Krisflyer from SIN-LHR, LHR-SIN, SIN-BNE.
Wasn't until I got back to brisbane that I noticed that I did get a small amount of points but also got the 30SC's for that one flight from BNE-SIN. Also found out that VA WAS actually codeshared with the flights to london, just wasn't showing up.

So in other words. Missed out on 110SC's (Amount would have earned if had velocity number) for segments SIN-LHR and return and also SIN-BNE...

Cop that one on the chin as a learning curve hahahaha ):

EDIT: Now also know that only got the small amount of points because it was a discount economy ticket - thought it was normal economy. Points didn't worry me so much as SC's

After spending far too much time during 2014 in and out of hospital (more than 20 admissions) with a heart condition, I had a procedure in January 2015 which seemed to do the trick. So, 6 months later, travel was back on the agenda. We managed a trip to Melbourne, a trip to Singapore, Hong Kong and Shenzhen, a cruise from Fremantle to Hong Kong on the Queen Elizabeth and another trip to Melbourne. I was feeling so confident that I booked a trip to Europe including a cruise from Rome to Dubai with my daughter and also another cruise from Hong Kong around Asia and ending in Singapore on the Queen Mary 2 with my husband. It had been 19 months since the last heart episode, so I feel that I wasn’t hasty in planning a trip the two trips.

To help fund this travel, I have been doing a little relief teaching, which is quite well paid and I find it very enjoyable on the whole. One of my colleagues took ill and I was asked to fill in for her absence. I didn't know that in that 10-day period, her 5 classes would have 8 tests which I was expected to mark, as well as prepare classes, answer emails, attend meetings, do yard duty etc. and ensure that all my students received high quality teaching. Most of these (except the latter) are not usual duties for relief teachers. Unfortunately, at the end of the 10-day stint, after quite a lot of pressure from some staff members to get all the marking done and very little support from others, my heart condition returned. The pressure for me to get all the marking done was because it would normally be done by staff members who teach those subjects and they preferred that I do it. I find it a little difficult to be as polite as usual to the two staff members who put me under so much pressure.

I had paid for all of our 8 flights, 16 nights of accommodation in London and Amsterdam, and deposit for the cruise. I hadn’t got around to booking a further 7 nights of accommodation.

And here is my travel mistake. I booked non-refundable nights at the two Hiltons. But I did arrange travel insurance with insureandgo paying a hefty extra amount to cover my pre-existing condition(s). I wrote to the two Hiltons but unfortunately, as I booked non-refundable rooms, all the money is forfeited. Hopefully, all the costs will be reimbursed by the travel insurance company. My only worry is that I don’t remember paying extra to remove the excess, so as the hotel bookings were made in blocks, I’m afraid that I may lose out.

What have I learnt? If there is a next time, as my travel insurance will probably skyrocket, I will book refundable hotel rooms and maybe swap to the lower rate at the last minute. The other option is to book any Hilton hotels using points and money rewards as I understand that they are refundable. And I will wait till about a month or so beforehand to book flights unless there is a great special. I thought we had done well, paying A$875 for flights on QR from SIN -> DOH -> AMS and DXB -> DOH -> SIN. But a couple of weeks ago, the price dropped to $775. I booked 3 seats for the 2 of us to have a bit of room to spread out. I also think that QR had a two for one J special which I would have far preferred.

Is there any good to come out of the situation? It could have been far, far worse if my heart condition returned whilst overseas. I would have been travelling with my adult daughter, but I don't expect her to act as my nursemaid. Part of the cruise was going to Egypt, Jordan, through the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden and on to Oman and Dubai. Not an area with high quality health care readily available.

Using hotels.com I ooked for Hawaii in what I thought was Dec 20 to 26. Somehow the dates have gone through as Nov 20 to 26. It' my mistake, but the accomodation was on a non refundable deal. I've contacted the hotel and am hoping to switich the dates.

I made quite the mistake earlier this year. I had 2 days to kill before attending the American Football game before the Superbowl in Denver and decided to spend those 2 days in NYC over Denver and SF. Only once I arrived in NYC did I realise Winter Storm Jonas was on the way. After two nervous days, including spending hours on the phone trying to get an earlier flight, I was assured by the airline that my very early Saturday morning flight to Denver would leave on time right before the Storm hit. At 9pm Friday, I was about to get a few hours sleep before I received an email letting me know that my flight was cancelled. If I accepted the new flight, I would miss the game, which was the only reason I was in the States in the first place.

I quickly packed my suitcase, checked out of the hotel and rented a car right as the snow started to fall. I drove from NYC to a hotel in Bloomsburg, PA, with the last two hours in near whiteout conditions with no one but a handful of trucks on the road. Even McDonalds was closed when I stopped hoping to get some coffee. The next morning the car was almost buried in snow but I continued on (with some difficulty!) to Cleveland, hopped on a plane very early Sunday morning and made it to the game in Denver with 90 minutes to spare.

A last minute fan trip, booked using airline and hotel points, ended up being very stressful and costly but with a happy ending!

Left CNX 18 hours earlier than I needed to leave and wasn't there to support my wife and missed the birth of my daughter.

Very poor planning.

Ouch.... but congratulations nevertheless. Has she signed up for a frequent flyer program yet? :)
Not yet but she will be a Qantas frequent flyer like daddy. Her first QF flight will be on QF24 on 17 November.

Not easy as she was an IVF baby and was always going to be cesarian. The first date was 04 October and then we planned to 19 September when doctor said she was not going go to full term. Perhaps we missed the signs and should have gone to hospital earlier. Perhaps doctor erred slightly trying to keep her in placenta as long as possible. Very difficult pregnancy. Wife is one tough lady.

I nearly missed my flight to BNE this morning. Got to the gate and they had to open the door to let me into the airbridge, having already closed it.

In the Taxi last Thursday @ MEL airport when push notification pops up on my iPhone, saying my aircraft is boarding! (And I am About 5 mins out in heavy traffic).

Luggage not accepted check in closed thankfully already checked in earlier (OLCI)

Had to send my luggage back to ( smart thinking) Home with the taxi and quickly go thru security as quickly as possible!

Anyway just made it !! But only due to some UM being bordered late! Whew !
