Mainly Namibia

Just the one line edit: lion 😊 that again we simply drove straight up to. They said the lines lions here never approach the vehicles and not danger unlike the ones in Kruger which can be man eaters.

I’m sure we all feel like this after a good feed of giraffe.

Backing up to yesterday. After missing the afternoon game drive, I was rather relieved just to be able to sit on my deck and look over the waterhole and see the coming and going of the animals in the late afternoon. Completely still annoyed to hear where the birds and the hoofs of the animals.

Aforementioned geese. Hmmmm … is that a target on the chest?

In my haste to get on the shuttle, I whacked my head on a louvre on the roof and opened up a decent cut, that proceeded to bleed for the next 30 mins. Extricated my carry-on from the porters and checked in. Very slow; people behind the counter having a lovely chat that wasn't to be interrupted. Sigh. I recall now my previous visits to west and southern Africa. I asked for a quiet room, as usual and was amazed when I reached it. Huge lounge, 2 bathrooms etc; largest room on the top floor by far, according to the evac plan. Downsides were that the aircon only worked like it was an aircraft engine running and the tele didn't work.

Dosed the head cut with antiseptic from my mobile pharmac_ and went down to dinner, looking for a bar snack. Nope, so to the restaurant. Very large and almost totally full. There was a buffet, but too expensive for what I wanted, so, after a wait, I ordered a burger.

Warm roll came about 30 mins later; I took one bite and chewed, then spat it out. Barely cooked, it was like eating a warm dough-ball. Burger wasn't much better. I'm probably grumpy with tiredness/jet lag.

To bed early, slept pretty well and contemplated my decision to stay at the Premier (an AFF recommendation). I've got another, pre-paid night here on my departure home.

I've stayed at this joint 3 or 4 times and really enjoyed every visit. About 7 mins on the shuttle from OR Tambo.

I look around the lodge a bit

Dining area

IMG_3283.jpeg

Rather oddly as I hadn’t yet met my group for the game drives, they put me on a table by myself the first night. I would’ve thought dinner would be a good time to meet them but there you go. Single table, in the corner:(

IMG_3293.jpeg

Lounge. The only place with good Wi-Fi in the complex. In the middle last night I was getting a bit of Wi-Fi in my room, but they don’t promise reception there.

BYO Starlink Mini but that might defeat the HLO philosophy
The Wi-Fi completely died last night so they got onto IT Support who got right onto it. Found there was a fault and fixed it.

Fancy that - IT Support who was actually useful 😳 and didn’t even ask me to turn my phone off and on again.

I think they mentioned that Starlink cannot be used in South Africa and I think saying that it was the only country in Africa where it couldn’t be used ( legally).

So we’ve reached the stage where there’s nothing else happening except animals. Hopefully there is interest amongst the blizzard of pictures.

Bit of family time at the waterhole

Fun in the mud. First have a drink

IMG_6286.jpeg

Then stir up the mud

Then apply liberally ( note mud flying above)

Question here is how would you feel having to eat bloody thorny bushes all the time?

Moving onto a couple of giraffes - a bit far away hopefully we will get closer tomorrow. The giraffes here are a hybrid species or several hybrid species.

And the days highlight. Hopefully more of these tomorrow as it’s supposed to be the lodges specialty. Nice golden glow in the late afternoon light.
