My outbound flight is a classic plus seat and the return leg is classic seat. Am I able to cancel the first leg for a refund of those points (minus cancellation fee), and keep the return leg as a classic booking?

Certainly a new circumstance.

I'd suggest few, if any, here have experience of such.

If you do try can you advise the outcome?

It took an hour on the phone but the change was possible. I had to be transferred to someone trained in classic plus bookings and she was up for the challenge to make it work.

I originally booked an outbound classic plus in economy but then had a notification from expert flyer that I class was available for that flight. First off she requested 2 seats and it was miraculously approved given I tried so many times to request those seats last year.

She then had to seperate both of the original flights and then apply a change fee to cancel the first leg. She had to speak to another department as the return leg was now being quoted in IDR and she didn't want to make any changes to this sector.

From her end, it was the first time doing it and it was complicated. But I was lucky to get someone from Hobart who wanted to find a solution. She calculated a refund of taxes and points, at that point it got overly complicated to understand what I would get back. I'll update you when all of the points and taxes are returned. But effectively, I now have two seperate tickets with both of them being classic rewards. Theoretically, I should get back the 54k points I paid for the classic plus ticket minus the fee. I will update.
