My outbound flight is a classic plus seat and the return leg is classic seat. Am I able to cancel the first leg for a refund of those points (minus cancellation fee), and keep the return leg as a classic booking?

Certainly a new circumstance.

I'd suggest few, if any, here have experience of such.

If you do try can you advise the outcome?

It took an hour on the phone but the change was possible. I had to be transferred to someone trained in classic plus bookings and she was up for the challenge to make it work.

I originally booked an outbound classic plus in economy but then had a notification from expert flyer that I class was available for that flight. First off she requested 2 seats and it was miraculously approved given I tried so many times to request those seats last year.

She then had to seperate both of the original flights and then apply a change fee to cancel the first leg. She had to speak to another department as the return leg was now being quoted in IDR and she didn't want to make any changes to this sector.

From her end, it was the first time doing it and it was complicated. But I was lucky to get someone from Hobart who wanted to find a solution. She calculated a refund of taxes and points, at that point it got overly complicated to understand what I would get back. I'll update you when all of the points and taxes are returned. But effectively, I now have two seperate tickets with both of them being classic rewards. Theoretically, I should get back the 54k points I paid for the classic plus ticket minus the fee. I will update.

So, this has been quite a painful process to have my ticket reissued but I am almost there. I have called at least 2 times each day to enquire about my updated ticket as I dont want my award seats to drop out of the system.

The first operator in Hobart advised that I would get a refund of points and cash which was greater than what I originally paid for the classic plus tickets! Apparently they convert it to a $ amount and then the system works out the refund. AMAZING, but nobody wants to issue the ticket.... Apparently it needs to be done manually and the deadline was apparently last night which is when I was promised the ticket would be reissued.

I woke up this morning to no ticket. I called Qantas and was advised that my refund had been incorrectly calculated. However, the refund still sees me ahead in taxes paid and the points refund actually covers the cancellation fee. So, overall the change has cost me nothing in points and Qantas are giving me cash. The points have landed in my account, just waiting for the cash.

At one point I was advised that a classic plus and a classic ticket cant be separated. I would need to cancel the booking and start again! However, after being on hold for a while she advised that the conditions of the classic award would apply which does allow for sectors to be cancelled within the ticket. A big relief as there are no classic awards left for my dates.

From what I can see, it appears as if the dynamic pricing nature of the classic plus impacts the refund. I also think that the price of the classic plus sector increased when it was separated from my return leg, with the one way ticket costing more.

Seems odd that they would recalculate the CR+ off the current amount and refund that? That would allow you to book a CR+ on sale and then cancel it closer to the date when the price had risen? Maybe the fact you're splitting it out from a return to a one-way has this effect.

Very odd. My first quoted refund on Tuesday was for 75k points and $250. Today it was for 58k points and $190 cash. I initially paid 54k points and $140 cash.
