Malaysia Airlines Free Seat Selection at Online Check-In

I have a return journey (booked via QF) originating in Australia on QF and connecting to KUL on MH.
I can manage my QF booking via the MH website, but seat selection for the MH legs is currently paid.
Does anyone know if this changes to free for standard seats once online check-in opens?

I assume you're in Y because I chose my seat in J booked with QF points, is that the case?

Yes flying in Y on a cash fare.
