I have been able to select all available seats in Y at time of booking for no cost, including exit rows on domestic economy, but not the extra leg room seats on the A330's (row 9/10 if memory serves me).

I wasn't so lucky, cost was minimal but I reckon that is what to expect when dealing with a LCC.

MH isn't a LCC!

You could try out Scoot or AirAsia if you want LCC into Malaysia.

Yes, I have travelled with Malaysia Airlines in Business class recently, which is why I am going in economy this time,save some money because in my opinion their business class is not as near good as it used to be.

In my opinion once you start being charged for a seat, you are on a low cost carrier.
The only reason I have to go with them is that they have a direct flight from Denpasar to Manila, with only one stop and that is for 1 hour,
all the other low cost carriers have layovers of 8 hours or more, necessitating a hotel room.

There are many full service carriers who charge for seat selection - QF is an example (i.e for non-status pax in Y on certain fare types), heck BA even charge for J seat selection as it has been discussed here.

Ok..well...that puts a lot of airlines into the LCC bucket then. Maybe they include the seat selection cost into the ticket anyhow?

From memory last time I flew MH I either allocated a seat free of charge (as QF gold) or was able to select free of charge as soon as online check in opened. I can’t remember which but I definitely didn’t pay for seat selection and was able to get the seat I wanted, including on one of the sectors reallocating seating as the seat map evolved during OLCI period.

Qantas...along with most other 'full service' carriers charge for seat selection.

You can absolutely choose seats at time of booking. I don't think there are any restrictions on the seats you can choose from.
