Wouldn't be any point in MH having their own lounge once they're part of OW. One of the benefits for them of membership

Absolutely. eg. In Syd, depending on your class of travel or OW status, you will have access to the QF F lounge or J lounge...why would you seek out the MH lounge? In Kul, I would certainly be seeking out the MH F (or J) lounge ;)l

So this will suggest that the MH lounge in syd will be closed soon?

Not necessarily.

QF retains lounges in HKG.
AA, BA retain lounges in LHR T3
CX has a lounge at NRT

I don't see much point in MH keeping their lounges in Australia but it is not a given that they'll give up all their lounges. For example, I don't see them giving up their lounge in LHR since they're in T4 (and they've only recently renovated it as well) and I don't think they're going to be moving to T3 either.

MH use to have their own lounge at BNE, but that closed about 5 or 6 years ago. From then on they use the Qantas lounge. Yet they have kept their own lounges at SYD, MEL and PER. I assume it made sense to keep them rather than contract out lounge to someone else at the other airports. Does joining OW suddenly change that significantly? How much does it cost to run their own lounges vs contracting it out? A lot of it will come down to financials that we don't really know. Do OW airlines charge each other less for lounge access than for third parties.

Also running your own lounge is important from a marketing stand point. You have your brand all over it. Australia seems to be an important market for them so I could see them keeping them just for that aspect. Perhaps keeping SYD and/or MEL.

At Melbourne the Qantas lounge closes early, so with the current opening hours could not be used for the late MH flight. I guess MH could pay them extra to keep it open, but it might be easier or cheaper to keep the Golden lounge going. CX have keep their lounge at MEL going or maybe MH could use the CX lounge.

I am not sure they will close it, no doubt other airlines pay when their customer uses a QF lounge, with MH there will be a One World lounge at SYD in a pier that's has not had any, which could be handy for all parties concerned.

yes agree. MH J lounge not much to write home about, but still nice and quiet. Lounge in KL is outstanding

If MH decide to utilize their OW membership and utilize QF lounge rather than continue their own lounge, together with possibility of EK using QF lounges. Would this present a capacity issue for QF?

Their are numerous OW hub ports where OW airlines choose not use their hub partner lounge but a third party lounge. Eg in HKG, RJ, AY, JL & S7 do not use either the CX or QF lounges.

Their lounge in London is even better, I reckon. It is my favourite lounge of theirs even after the renovations at KUL.

Agree the last time I was in Khrushchev at the MH lounge in 2007 it was great!
