Malaysian Airlines QFF earn table

So the clever coughs even stopped the trick of booking Aus-KUL and KUL-Europe tickets separately.

Since QF is codesharing on EK to KUL, if I book that QF codeshare flight and then have MH bookings will they check me all the way through including on to MH, say if I was going to India or elsewhere in Asia?

Just seeing if I have this right so if you were just using Malaysia Airlines to travel within Asia or from Asia to Europe or even Asia to Australia would be okay for maximum earn of points?

The Qantas wording states that earning rates are based on the fare bucket you're booked in and calculated on a flight-by-flight basis, not your overall route.
Therefore one can't escape the lower earning rate by routing to/from somewhere beyond Malaysia.

For flights between Asia destinations and domestic Malaysian non-gateways and Europe/UK/Australia/New Zealand you'll earn the higher rate on the flight(s) between Asia (including domestic) and KUL/BKI, then the lower rate for the longer flight from KUL/BKI to Europe/UK/Australia/New Zealand.

So Qantas is only happy with us to use MH for intra-Asia, JED & LAX, but that's pretty hard when they don't want us to use them to get to KUL or BKI in the first place... It would be nice if they acknowledged that Malaysia is a hole in their network and they at least code shared on MH's flights to Australia so we could access the direct intra-Asia network rather than always having to route via KUL/BKI first.

How dare Qantas protect it's own business in the middle of an attempted turn around. How dare they offer lower earn rates on a competitive carrier than on their own metal, how dare they structure their frequent flyer program to benefit their airline more so than their competitors. How dare Qantas try to look after its own interests, they should of known well that all Australian customers would prefer to travel on Malaysian and should therefore of afford a earn rate that was better than that on QF, Qantas how dare you… Shame on you.

You do of course realise that it was Qantas that sponsored Malaysia into oneWorld.

Has anyone ever thought that this is maybe due to MH not wanting to pay more for the points, as they are the ones who have to pay for them?

Why would MH choose to turn away customers only on routes operated by QF/EK when MH have better flight options? It doesn't make sense.

I really would prefer to fly QF for all of my international travel, but the simple fact is that ex PER there are often very few options.

Consider flying PER SGN on QF, you need to fly PER SIN on QF then SIN SGN on 3K. So not only would I have to fly a leg on 3K with sometimes no lounge access, but often the fare is far more expensive than SQ, MH or even CX.

The problem is that now I'm being penalised even though a suitable option ex PER doesn't really exist. I was hoping to divert some flights from SQ to MH after MH joined OW, but this earn table does not really encourage that.

Yes, and as per everything in the airline industry, thats old news. Things change. Things have changed. Significantly, and I think the fact QF sponsored MH is at this point entirely irrelevant.

$400 will get you BKK KUL SIN in J, costs less than most of the Y earning fare buckets but books into Z which is non earning on most other airlines tables.

Fair point - I was looking at the extra-Asian flights and in particular SYD/KUL, where there isn't any other direct options (or cheap J flights)!

Wow, just wow. What an anti-competitive behavior there. I am speechless but then again- well, probably good for Qantas, at least in the short run!

HKG - SYD via KUL in Z for $1500 round trip is on offer :) (Or was last week ).

I just wish QF would just get a move on with its Asian strategy. QF start flying to KUL please, and codeshare on routes from KUL to around Asia please.

I would have agreed 12 months ago - I've stuck it out with QF knowing that eventually I'd have a viable (direct) SYD/KUL option with lounge access and status earn... Now my response is "I wish VA would expand their Asian footprint and give me an alternative KL route"!

I don't get this is a shock? They are practically in QFs back yard, and with CXs frequencies and coverage as well, there is not many reasons to fly QF to Asia.

They need to hold onto some small advantage. I wonder though about crediting QF to enrich....

Can someone tell me why this is such a bad thing?
From what I can see, there is now an extra airline that you can earn SC's and points on that wasn't previously there.
There are now extra lounges to access around the world.
Some now get extra baggage allowance FOC when travelling.

Considering MH didn't earn any points/SC's previously, and that you now can, seems to be a plus.

Wish I'd read that six hours ago (alhough that would have been difficult since you hadn't written it). That could be a great option - what's the best site to find this fare? (Just booked a SYD/SIN JASA on QF and direct KUL/SYD return on MH.)

People seem to be getting hot under the collar about the points on offer. But remember, for most of us (I think), the real game is in status credits - and we'll get full QFF status credits on MH flights.

If I've read the earn table correctly, you'd earn absolutely nothing on flights between KUL and LAX. North America is not mentioned in the long list of footnotes so, regardless of cabin or booking class, you get donuts, even on an xONEx. Delving further, what about intra-Asia flights, like KUL-PEK?

I think it's like being told you're getting a bike for Christmas then waking up Christmas Day and finding it's a unicycle.

I think your reading is wrong. There is a list of pairs that give a reduced rate, while anything not in that list gets the higher rate.

Hmmmm. I'm not sure. It says "Earn rates only apply where travel is between the following destination pairs". Wherever the # or * is (which is everywhere except KMLV) you only earn what's stated. So, if you don't fly between those "destination pairs", you don't earn. That's how I'd read it anyway but I agree that doesn't sound right.

Yes, but read the # and * qualification carefully

* = Earn rates only apply where travel is between the following destination pairs:

# = Earn rates only apply where travel is not between the following destination pairs:

The destination pairs are the same, so I would have thought that KUL-LAX would come under the # qualification.
