Re: Breaking: MH files for Administration

I've actually found MH service really good when I've flown them in the last 1.5 years. Hope they emerge a sustainable airline after this.

My experience with MH was a red-eye, half-empty Y flight PER-KUL where the FAs were the grumpiest I had ever encountered (and I've done a fair bit of US Domestic Y). I was given a horrid glare for asking for a bottle of water.

For the sake of my desire for a DONE4 in the future however, I hope they survive...

Re: Breaking: MH files for Administration

I flew J on the A380 KUL-CDG last Xmas and it was the best flight I've ever had...great service, lie flat seats, 15" screens and great food. I also flew a few weeks ago SYD-KUL and the flight was only 30% full....you cannot keep that up long term unless it was a quiet day.

Surely a single daily SYD-KUL service would suffice, not to mention other ex-AU services - 3 daily flights in the current climate is too much.

Admittedly I've always flown MH in J, maybe that's the difference.

I flew back from Europe a few years ago in Y LHR-KUL-BNE. Was really well timed leaving LHR late, arriving KUL early evening, leaving KUL mid morning after big sleep and arriving in BNE around 7pm. Jet lag sorted. And dirt cheap (about AU$600 one way). Can't recall any service issues. It'll be a shame if that route disappears as they're suggesting.

Re: Breaking: MH files for Administration

I got this email from the head of Enrich (MH's frequent flyer program) today:

Dear Mattg,

It is a pleasure to write to you with the latest news of our restructuring programme as it nears completion. This programme was initiated last August to create a profitable and financially sustainable national carrier.

We are happy to report that we continue to make good progress. It was announced today that MAS’s sole shareholder, Khazanah Nasional Berhad (Khazanah), has appointed Dato’ Mohammad Faiz Azmi of PricewaterhouseCoopers, as Administrator of MAS. The administration is a voluntary undertaking by Khazanah, Malaysia’s sovereign fund, and is backed by the Malaysian Airline System Berhad (Administration) Act 2015 (MAS Act) enacted by the Government of Malaysia.

This appointment does not affect our daily operations or existing reservations. You can continue to make reservations in full confidence that our flights and schedules are operating as normal, that tickets sold will be honoured, and that our Enrich frequent flyer programme continues with Miles and status preserved.

Under the MAS Act, the Administrator plays a critical role, which includes facilitating the transfer of selected assets and liabilities to a new company, MAB, which will replace MAS as Malaysia’s new national carrier. The appointment of the Administrator reflects the continuing and considerable effort towards the beginning of a new airline, MAB. We intend the transition to MAB to be seamless with no interruption to airline services.

MAB will become operational on 1 September 2015, with a new business model and a new management team, which will be led by Christoph Mueller, CEO of Malaysia Airlines and CEO-Designate of the new airline. These upcoming changes will not have an impact on flights, schedules, or the Enrich programme.

Our relationship with you is extremely important to us. I will keep you updated as we progress through this critical phase. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your continued support.

I would like to know what this "new" airline's business model will be. Is it going to be a full-service or low-cost airline? Why should I book "with confidence" today, if I don't know that the service I will receive won't be inferior to what I expect from the current Malaysia Airlines?

To be fair, it actually doesnt say nothing is changing, its says that "flights, schedules, or the Enrich programme". There are no doubt plenty of other things that could change, admin, staffing, service levels, etc.

MAS Restructure

I see MAS have almost finished their restructure. I hope it works for them.

Currently sitting in coughet with my return flight to Perth starting tomorrow with MH sectors HKT-KUL and KUL-DPS. I'm sure they will be unaffected. I hope the new airlines stays in OneWorld though!

Re: Breaking: MH files for Administration

The CEO doing the rescue is not the CEO who got the airline into trouble in the first place. MAS suffers as much as the rest of the country with cronyism, nepotism, class and caste division which holds the country back in all fields.

Re: Breaking: MH files for Administration

Similar for us too, flying J from LHR to PER leaving at 1200 and arriving at a civilised 1500 the next day, instead of the close to midnight for most other carriers. Never had a problem with their service in the past 5 years, and once also enjoyed a bump from J to F on the CDG to KUL A380 which was one of life's treats.

Whilst the 3pm arrival may be more palatable, I find it is horrendous for jet lag compared to a midnight arrival in PER.

IMHO, both superior to a 5-6am arrival on the east coast :)

Frankfurt has already disappeared from their schedule...

Does Malaysia need a national airline?
