Mamma Mia! New direct Perth-Rome route

To be announced today. New seasonal Sydney-Perth-Rome service with three Boeing 787-9 flights per week. Running from 22 June to 6 October. No times announced yet.
I can’t find PER on any maps.
I thought Germany or CDG would be next!
They are further away, so range/payload/cost come into play. When they flew to Rome years ago, the aircraft were always full, but it was apparently a pretty cost conscious form of passenger, so it was never a money spinner.

Looks like it's:
QF5
PER 22:20
FCO 08:45 (+1)
16 hr 25 min duration

And the return
QF6
FCO 10:50
PER 08:45 (+1)
15 hr 45 min duration

With J available for the inaugural!

Can we infer from that annoucment that more A380 should be back before the 22 of june, to free up some B787?

Wow this is cool. I imagine this could open up some interesting routings from FCO too through to other places.

Will be interested to see if this is underwritten in any way by WA govt and/or if it has any impact on the airport plans. I was under the impression there was a dispute holding up new routes until / due to the desire to move QF over to the consolidated side.

Perhaps South Africa ex PER may follow soon.

I'm surprised they haven't saved the QF5/6 flight numbers for a FRA route. Still, FCO is cool.

Qantas will have no trouble filling the FCO-PER flights to the brim during the last few weeks of July.

Qantas has mentioned that onward connections to cities across continental Europe will be available from FCO with its airline partners. Which airline partner would that be - ITA?

ITA seems like a poor choice but the only obvious choice. I suppose ITA willing to do them a real deal to get some pax (and obviously there is precedent for QF with the limited KL partnerships).

Personally I am not convinced at all. Yeah get a few full flights for maybe a peak summer month, and I get this will be seasonal, but I just can't see it being viable for more than VFR traffic.

I can't see higher yielding pax giving up options like SQ or EK for this flight and so struggle to see how it might make real money (it's not LHR which has a very different demand dynamic, not to mention multiple connection options and strong OW hub).

Time will tell.

I think FRA will return in a couple of years. This is just a short term seasonal route to capture VFR demand post reopening. (Which is much greater to Italy than Germany).

FRA and CDG to a degree will need corporate demand to return for them to work.

I think this will happen by winter, i wouldnt be surprised to see a SYD-PER-JNB route for the return with an A330 while demand is still slow.

We'll see what happens with SAA but seems thats a dead duck - or at least it should be.

I interpreted that as European connections are available, ie on EK via DXB. Not that they will necessarily be through FCO?

"Qantas will offer connections to 16 destinations in Europe including Athens, Barcelona, Frankfurt, Nice, Madrid and Paris and 15 destinations within Italy including Milan and Venice."

Great that they are adding new routes but unless the fares come out at a decent price it’s probably not for me. $9.5k in J for dates I want when I could fly with one of the ME3 for $7-8k and enjoy a stop over on one or both ways. I can see how it does appeal to many but it’s just not for me. I do hope it succeeds and more routes are added though

I think this is a great initiative. Not sure how long it will last but I think that at least for a year or two people will want to fly direct between Oz and their destination esp from Perth given it seems the majority of the population has supported McGowans policies (I am not one). Also going direct saves a lot of money on Covid testing if I understand the situation correctly which I probably don’t because the whole situation seems confusing and to be frank I haven’t done any research on the issue as no doubt requirements will all change from time to time before I fly
