I have also done the Ipswich to BNE airport drive many times and get frustrated by the level of traffic. I have even missed a flight on more than one ocassion due to traffic between the gateway bridge and airport drive.

I was talking about this on a flight once with the passenger sitting beside me. They recommended taking Kingsford Smith Drive on to Lomandra Drive then on to Airport Drive.

I have not done this route personally so cannot comment on if it really is an effective time saver. Given how much of a roundabout way this is to get to the airport, the traffic would need to be pretty bad for this to be any quicker.

Most recent experience TODAY!!! a 5 km journey from the Toombul shopping centre took 25 minutes at 2.05pm today.....made a lot of calls in that time sitting still...sitting and enjoying a well earned scotch now in the QP
 
A roundabout with traffic lights?

I don't remember this roundabout. Clearly I had way too much to drink at the FT AGM a couple of weeks ago. How long has it been there?

I did notice a lot of roadworks going on in the city and I used the airtrain back to the airport which was OK.

Yes, traffic lights have been installed at this roundabout to help with the traffic flows. That roundabout was notorious for accidents (a large proportion of which involved taxis). Since the lights were installed, traffic congestion has been marginally improved and the accident rate significantly decreased.

But the real way to fix the traffic problem there is to spend serious amounts of money. A US-style freeway mix-master would help.

The use of traffic lights certainly defeats the real purpose of the roundabout. If there is a need to resort to traffic lights then people don't know how to drive the roundabout properly OR it is very poorly designed in the first instance. In this case I'd agree with NM that flyover entry/exits are required.
 
I know that roundabout really well; I don't think it poorly designed in itself. It just that the amount of traffic using it these days has made what seemed a viable option 15 years ago now completely inadequate.

The traffic lights are an interim measure, methinks the implementation of the "Northern Link" will see the lights removed from the roundabout when 30-40% of Airport traffic no longer uses it.

indeed correct. no roundabout can cope with the volume of traffic on and off all entry/exists experienced there.

Work is well under way for the northern link. Not sure what is happening with southern approaches, but that is just as necessary.

might work if it has a 500m radius. But at peak times the volume of traffic will still clog it at its current radius. Now where are Brian, Doogle and Zebedee when we need them to fight off the evil Zeebad :evil: creating traffic congestion on the roundabout?

Now where is that thread about the last tune stuck in your head :shock:
