A picture is worth a thousand words. did you by chance snap a pic of the RFYBKM on site?
So on FRA-SIN I advised Hoon (LSS) that I was going to try out a new 'mini-mattress' on the 380 R Suite bed - I headed to WC as Hoon was commencing bed assembly - on return it was almost completed with bottom cover already fitted:

I was not going to burden her to remove and refit it after mattress added so I just lay it on top of bottom cover and slept straight on top of mattress:

And the finished product with top cover / quilt / doona fitted and Teddys nestled:

I did ask Hoon if she had ever seen any other clown ever BYO mattress in the past - she giggled her way through the answer 'NO and I have checked other Crew Members and none of them seen it either!'

Inflation / deflation is really easy and takes less than a minute either way - I did buy the full length version by mistake but don't regret that now - given how easily it bends / folds I have no concerns about the shape of the bed I am going to use it on.

My Verdict: 99% sure sleep in considerably enhanced on the 2 tests so far - I do consume plenty Champs and also do take sleeping tabs on o/n flts but am not a great sleeper - I do think I slept better with this mattress - TBH I don't really know if the RED or BLACK side of mattress is ground side or sleeping side - the BLACK side feels softer and smoother so I guess RED side is ground side. Whatever I did not find it uncomfortable to sleep straight on top of the mattress.

I may have slightly over-inflated it on 2nd test - next time I will not inflate quite so fully and try it that way - but up until now from me to RF it's 👍👍👍

Just had my first failure.

Asiana J, angled flat bed ALA-ICN. They only give a slinky blanket, and with a spare seat next to me, I grabbed that blanket as the mattress' cover sheet.

Didn't work. Slinky blanket kept sliding down, taking me with it. The whole set up was sub optimal. Deflated it and read an ebook.

Yeah, I know, serves me right for flying Asiana. But out of Almaty, you know ...

Trying it on SQ F this evening. 😊.

Would you care to take to the ultimate test and try it sans Champs?

Now, I think that's taking product testing for AFF too far! 😱😳

Thats an interesting observation. So no sheet on top of RFYBKM is the recommendation?

Not from me. A cover over the mattress lessens the 'lying on plastic' sensation. It's just that with Asiana, the combination of angled bed and a 'slinky' blanket/cover, made it impractical.

I used it with Qantas' angled flat bed and their cotton mattress pad, and it worked OK.

I’ve seen the light! Purchased the Ascent 25 for $60 at KTM just prior to my last trip and can confirm it’s worthwhile even if it does take a little space in the carryon. As a side sleeper the pressure points were a lot softer.

My flights were TG A380 F and CX 777 F. Both FAs were intrigued having never seen anything like it before but were keen to help inflate and pack.

On SQ (old) suites, the FA allowed me to deploy it during her bed-making-up, but in this case wasn't very curious about it at all. Mine is the '2/3' size one (per OP) and certainly added to the comfort. When it came to the morning, I forgot about the mattress and went to the bathroom to change. When I came back, the bed was gone and the inflated mattress was neatly place across the end of the suite, ready for my attention. ;)

In a normal J seat, I find I can discretely deploy it after lights out ... or in the case of QR, at any time, as the J spaces are pretty private anyway.

The Ascent 25 short hiking mat is on special until tomorrow for $71.99. If you sign up to be a Kathmandhu subscriber I think you get a $20 voucher to use

I bought mine a few months ago after the first post, thru the QF Mall for $59. Used it a few weeks ago on a couple of EY J flights and it worked well for me, I can't usually sleep on my side on aircraft, so it was a blessing. My carryon is a backpack with a couple of wheels, so I instead of rolling it up as they are delivered, I folded it down to about a foot square and two inches thick, sat on it with the valve open to expel all the air, closed the valve and it fits neatly into the back pack without any issues. Well worth the investment.

This is all very interesting, particularly in consideration of hard beds. We have a rellie we stay with whose bed is so hard, we've argued about who was going to sleep on the two inches of foam on the floor instead (it's also way too small for two large people).
