Maybe a stupid question for Flight ADL - Mel - DXB with 10 hour transit in MelšŸ˜¬. And Luggage query.

Have booked an Award fare for December next year, Adelaide - Mel - Dubai, that has a 10 hour layover in Melbourne. I presume as we transit from domestic to International we can exit and spend the night in a Hotel? And presuming that luggage can be checked through to DXB from Adelaide. Any issues with immigration?

On QF - EK?
If ADL-MEL is domestic no issues with MEL emigration

Hopefully not QR QR (as some other threads)

Should be fine. The question might actually be will QF short check your luggage if you need it in MEL, otherwise theyā€™re probably obligated to check through given itā€™s less than 12 hr transit.

I learnt on this site that SYD *doesnā€˜t* overnight check through luggage. So you have to schlep your luggage around the next day. Not something Iā€™ve had to do.

We'd be fine with getting it checked through as it's a 6am departure from Melbourne. Not much time in the F lounge šŸ˜¢

Note my update above. A regular MEL o/n transitor should be able to confirm if MEL holds luggage o/n. I believe they do but could be wrong!

I have been in this situation as I live in ADL and in the past have regularly caught late flights out of ADL to connect to early flights out of MEL (or SYD). IME QF will only through check your luggage QF-EK if on the same day. Also IIRC I have also had to collect luggage when connecting QF-QF if it is an overnight transit e.g. ADL-MEL-HKG and ADL-MEL-NRT. I would also ask at ADL airport when checking in if it is possible (I always do) however I suspect that the answer you will receive is 'you will have to collect your bags and recheck in the morning'.

On the upside living in ADL and having to connect to most international flights via SYD or MEL it is an easy way to retain status in the Discovery/ PGR hotel ecco system.

Very true; at one stage in certain airports (globally) it was 24 hours There was a quality called 'a sense of humor'.

I haven't done this in OZ for such a while; you are the most relevant reference!

Yes, you could go into Melbourne for the evening though I'd suggest just dumping yourselves at the Parkroyal or other airport hotel due to the early departure. You could potentially go through international 0400ish (if you wanted) and assume EK lounge would be open before QF F but at least get some time before a 0515ish boarding call for the EK flight. If it were me I'd just get in at 8pm and go to the hotel and zone out imo.

QF's departure control setup does permit overnight through checks to the early morning EK departure in MEL, however QF staff are under explicit instruction to short tag only to MEL. This is due to the fact that QF cannot send the bags over to EK until a few hours before departure and QF baggage handlers aren't around early enough at MEL domestic to do so.

I don't think I am 'the most relevant reference' in my cases I am normally connecting dom-int or vice-versa. When I have flown through hubs connecting int-int e.g. HND, SIN, DXB etc I have not had an issue with luggage transfers for up to 24 hours. I would be interested to know if the QF types from across the ditch have a different experience for example QF AKL-MEL/SYD and then onward with QF say to LHR or any other international destination. I am aware you can transit MEL or SYD int-int but it is not something I would normally have to do.

I second an overnight at the Parkroyal MEL airport.
Rooms are not cheap, but the hotel is easy to find.
Holiday Inn is a pain as you have to go out the back towards McDonald's, not nice in dark.
Also Ibis Budget has no lift and that one is not 24 hr check in, after hours is a pain, as it's button method.
Int dep process initial entry now is via scanning of BP at the first scanning gate, via swing gate, you might face the wand for bomb residue test in group of 5 pax at the alcove here, but very fast process now at MEL T2.
As the ADL - MEL flight is purely QFd, you won't pass immi till you dep T2 for 6am flight.
They are quite nice for outgoing with facial recognition DIY.
REMOVE spectacles tho.

I'm pretty sure Qantas' issue is with <Domestic>-<Overnight>-<International> connections.

AKL-xSYD-DXB with overnight in SYD should be fine for though checked luggage as would be a same day SYD-xMEL-DXB with 12 hours at MEL.

Have you decided where to stay yet
Be ready for an early appearance at EK's zone check in at MEL T2 tho.
QFd ADL might not issue an EK BP, even on QF's BP paper stock, as its overnight stop, they might if it was same day, but overnight, you would probably have to start from scratch in MEL at 3.30am/4am at the EK counter.
On google, it lists EK409 dep at 6.30am, so check in would probably be 3.30am to 4am.
Give it 15mins to half an hour from swing open first BP scan to get into secure area, then passport DIY, then int security screening, then walk all the way to gate 10 upstairs, might be 4.45am, if you start the sojourn at 4am.
I had done it once with EK F MEL - AKL a long time ago, pre covid when EK used to fly east coast Au - NZ.
The F lounge is definitely better than the QFi MEL J lounge in the basement!
