Maybe I should just give up with VA/ Velocity

A little late to the party, but MrsJJ and I are travelling HA J this Sunday, BNE-SYD-HNL on velocity points, booked in January. January seemed to be a bit of a sweet spot, as I booked a bunch of flights that month, where points flights were fairly available and demand was only starting to increase. The only problem is we are on JQ J for the return, but I see more birds are back in the air this week.

You need to be methodical when booking Hawaiian flights with Virgin. Simply checking the Hawaiian website for award availability or calling in and trying a bunch of dates won't work. Hawaiian needs to the lowest saver business award for it to appear in Virgin's system. One thing I will suggest and it is a bit unconventional is to try flying AKL to HNL. Hawaiian has substantially more J availability out of there and I reckon finding award availability for that short domestic flight down to AKL be it through NZ or QF shouldn't be too hard.

If you have some specific dates in mind, let me know and I'll see what I can find for you.
