Maybe I've just not looked before, but are these charges new?

Nope - they’ve been there for yonks as some would say…

Lowest on both Virgin and Rex are between $100 and $200 but no lounge/priority benefits

Not new.
No, not new, I know they have always had that, maybe in the past it was hidden in charges, fees, and levies.
When fares are $99, they (airlines) reduce the seat cost by a lot, but they have to onpay the fees and charges to the airport.
That's the trouble so to speak with buy now, fly now, way of thinking that the airlines have.
They like us to buy now and fly in a few weeks.
Just like how they do raise fares due to school holidays, or when demand is high.
Au - Japan with QF this year is asking for about $8k in J, go figure.

I just checked virgin for approx the same time and their lowest is $699 one way. What is on in Melbourne on Thursday? This is the time the flight has to be (approx 4pm) because of work commitments. A normal time for us but usually no more than $300.

A quick search on matrix - eg. QF at 545pm one seat $634 but every seat after that (up to 9) is $900+ so availability must be getting tight.

Virgin at 540pm —> $309 at 540pm

VAd still allows us pax to buy entry into their lounge, $69 per entry I think I paid the last time.
So I would say, have to weigh it up in the end, total costings.
Each sector would have separate charges, you only list one set of security charge, so there would be another set, for the other sector.
Apart from the dom passenger & service charge, and the security charge, there would be the fuel levy too.
All those codes that we see on int flights, WX/YX etc, ie, 2 alphabet ones, will also apply for Aust dom travel.
I think that there is a code decipher tool somewhere.

Too late unfortunately for business catch up that night.

I think I'd be flying Virgin - that is just ludicrous
No cheaper for that time.

Cox Plate weekend? T20 World Cup traffic?

What date are you looking at specifically, Thursday 20 October? When I check Virgin it's $309 for that 4:40pm flight, and business class at $399 . The $309 for economy is on the high end but far from unheard of... I can't get anything near $699 to come up.

Also, the 5:45pm flight on Qantas is $491, certainly expensive but a lot better than the $928 one at 4pm. (If you really must go at 4pm, maybe you could at least pay $1044 for business class!)

Looks like QF and APAM have a specific agreement about their airport fees and charges, so its not listed on google.
So, probably QF is able to save a bit, maybe they get a discount for T1 arr and dep pax overall.
But they still have to remit the money to APAM (Aust Pacific Airport P/L).
But for T2/T3/T4, airport fees and charges account for about $28 to $30 of fares charged by the airlines to us.
No way to escape these.

Edit:
I would fly VAd J on that day, or the lower fare and pay for lounge access, have done it before in the past, for that $399, as mentioned below.

Weds 19th ADL - Mel. That's the screenshot I posted earlier. And again here.

Business class was not available on the 4pm flight either.

Rationale for 4pm is to arrive into Melbourne cbd by around 7.00 in order to get a meal and sleep before a full day workshop on the next day, after business meetings on the day of first travel. Arriving into Mel CBD at 9.30 pm for 8am start the next day isn't a good business recipe.

Without specifics it’s hard (you’ve now stated date and preferred travel time, I just picked a random evening time slot), id certainly consider later at that price differential, but YMMV. I picked 540 as that would allow near full work day in ADL before travel.

If travelling HLO, you should get to MEL CBD well before 930pm from a 540 flight (again, YMMV).

You’ve obviously weighed it all up and the time specific requirement is more important than the cost (/worth the cost).

It’s worth noting that many would shift slightly to attain better pricing.

When is the return? That will be factoring into the very high overall return fare (weighing up all the same factors - preferred schedule, other factors such as meeting completion time, flight availability etc).

The next evening. That was a Red Deal at $400. Bargain. 😒😂

Your screenshot didn't show the date and the message said Thursday, I think I am justified in thinking you meant Thursday.

I agree with others, few would pay this much just for a 1.5 hour time difference. But the fact that you in fact did, shows that both airlines are justified in charging this - they might as well make money off people like you and subsidise the cheap fares at other times for the rest of us!

I don't think there's any need to feel you need justify your thoughts, likewise I expected my screenshot to explain the fare structure on the day I was booking. 😉 I mentioned Thursday later in the thread because thats the next day after travelling the night before to get there.

But the reason for posting was asking about those charges as I'd not investigated them before. And as I posted earlier the later flight is the same price so business needs on the day of travel dont give 'people like me', whatever that means, 🤷‍♀️ a choice.
