McLaren Vale recommendations - cellar doors and restaurants

Hi gurus

Visiting McLaren Vale for couple of days later this week and would love some cellar door and restaurants recommendations to visit while we are there.

I haven't eaten there for a while but the food at Darry's veranda used to be excellent with lovely views over the valley

Salopian Inn is always excellent food

Wirra Wirra has a nice cellar door as does Coriole

I've also had an excellent meal at Maxwells

D’Arry’s veranda restaurant is still very good (from memory, you get free entry to the Cube). Coriole has a nice restaurant attached.

Other go to wineries on my list include Kay Brothers, Chapel Hill, Wirra Wirra, and many others!

Check the websites (see link above - it also has most wineries there if you scroll down).

Hopefully they've gone back to more casual drop-in mode but some wine regions seem to have embraced the seated tastings (and the ability to charge for it).

Best winery we visited in July 2021 trip was Penny’s Hill. For the wine that is.

Close second was Gemtree.

'Twas a very chilly weekend and a rather bleak day but I managed a late walk watching receding rainbows this evening. In the other direction the sun was setting. Carrum Beach

Chalk Hill is excellent. If you like gin it’s even better, as the Never Never gin distillery is 5 meters walk from their tasting rooms.

Oh and stuck in between is an Italian takeaway which is good to sober up with before heading into the next winery.

I ate in D'Arrys 6 weeks ago and have the degestation & matching wines with my wife. Amazing meal and experience. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It is pricey though...

Lunch was excellent! ....and no public holiday surcharge was a bonus.

Realise I am very late to this party, but had the tasting menu at Coriole in March and we thought it was very good value.

How was your visit? Any particular highlights?

I enjoyed the wines at Hugh Hamilton last weekend, tasted 7 plus their cordial. Loved the Drama Queen sparkling rose.

Had lunch at his brothers Richard Hamilton's winery Leconfield, they are famous for their pies but were sold out and the anti pasto plate was just ok, and the wines not a patch on Hughs.
