Sorry to say but definitely cannot make it Mal as we will be in LAS for a trade show - hopefully we might finally meet in your neck of the woods next June.

As previously noted am working until 8pm but good to attend after that. Southbank would be more convenient for me.

~2 week out bump. Venue not yet chosen, but I was thinking Chinatown. Any suggestions? (doesn't have to be Chinatown... Can be anywhere)

If you still like spicy food go to Sichuan House. They are also building a big new Dainty Sichuan on Lonsdale, but don't know when it will open.

Oh, I love spicy food. But I'm looking for somewhere more mainstream food wise.

Dirty Dumplings? That is very "Melbourne"

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it. We have lots of stuff going on for the last week of the school term including packing for our holiday in the first week of the school break.

Still can't work out a location - can a local assist?

Thought about Shanghai Village, but I don't think they take bookings, and cash only is against the AFF meet-up policies :D

Dragon Boat was another option, but I'm seeing some very average reviews of the place.

So where is somewhere in the CBD (Or Docklands) that accepts bookings, credit cards and would appeal to a variety of tastes?

Most cheap places in Chinatown do not take reservations. Hutong Dumpling Bar does, however they are a cut above Shanghai Village in both price and quality.

Another good CBD option is Little Malaysia - and they are BYO.

We have used "Bearbrass" before - $15 Pint and Pizza Wednesdays.

Agree. Bearbrass is reasonable IMHO, and they are close to Flinders St for those catching Public Transport.

If you just want cheap - go to Father's Office, but I have found service to be extremely variable in recent times. Food is yum and cheap though.

G’day Mal et al. If you want somewhere with average prices what about Shark Fin Inn at top end of Little Bourke? It’s not as fancy as its sister Shark Fin House but prices are cheaper. It is also BYO and fully licensed and if I remember right is not crowded on a Wednesday night. I haven’t been there for a while but I reckon if I ordered for 6-8 people a la carte it would probably be around $30 - $35 per head depending on how hungry you are and which dishes you order. Then there’s drinks on top of course.

For say 8 people, as a suggestion, how about for starters Peking Duck and Sang Choi Bao, followed by Cantonese Fillet steak, Pork Ribs in port wine sauce, Spicy Calamari, Lemon Chicken (or chicken in black bean sauce), Chilli prawns, Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce and a noodle dish if still hungry and finished off with dessert say a banana fritter. I estimate that this would be around the $35 mark. Of course less dishes if less people.

I should still be able to make this but now have a 5am start the next morning so would prefer not too late a start.

Looks good to me. I'll give them a call on Friday and see if I can get a booking (I'll make it for 10, but think we're closer to 6).

Unless someone wants to do me a huge favour and give them a call for me :)

Hi Mal
You seem to be struggling.. you know you shouldn't give the customer a choice.. just confuses them ;) :)
I am happy to help :)
Did you want me to book Bearbrass? Or would you prefer Chinatown?
Make a bold choice and they will follow :)
Let me know how I can help :)

That would be great if you could book for me. Bearbrass (with a backup option of Shark Fin Inn ). Jetlag, opening hours and lack of planning are all taking their toll on me!

I can't make it, but I'll be in the Virgin Lounge between 4-6pm in MEL if anyone will be there?
Regards, Peter
