Thinking about redeeming some AAdv miles for J on MH.

there are 2 flights MEl-KUL - A330s and 777s. Are the J seats the same on both? Seatguru says that there's a version of A330 that is recliner seats - is it safe to assume that version does not fly to MEL? Or should I avoid A333 metal in case we get recliner seats?

All the A330s are the new ones and have angled flat seats. Seat guru is very out of date. I personally prefer the angled seats on the B777 over the A330.

777s are 2-3-2 vs 2-2-2 on A330, but 777 does have huge distance between rows, so if stuck in middle or window seats, very easy to get to aisle.

I find both uncomfortable to sleep, so my advice is to get a day flight if you can.

where can one look up availability for awards on MH? I tried both AA and QF sites and neither shows MH award availability....

I signed up to Enrich - login doesn't even work (gives an error).....

I would pick the A330 because of 2-2-2 and newer product.

BA shows availability

On reflection, I'd go with the timetable that works best for you. The difference isn't significant enough to favour one over the other, and 2-3-2 is not necessarily a disadvantage, as often the middle (of the 3) seat is empty .... so if in a centre aisle you may end up with seat for yourself and a 1/2 a seat for your stuff!

The availability for Enrich points-holders is much higher than with any other OW points as the Reward Seats book into different classes. If you have (or can get) the Enrich points I would try to contact MH to get your account fixed. You would lose the 15% discount if you book over phone.

So I have done some searching on BA for availability:
- am i being optimistic in expecting to find 3-5 J awards on a single flight? Maybe I assume that given MH's woes recently, their load factors are low and there was going to be plenty of award availability MEL-KUL in J for June
- when I search for 2 J seats MEL-KUL I see no availability across an entire week in June
- but when I change search to 1 J award on same sector, I see plenty of availability, with most of these options showing "Only 4 reward seats left" or "only 2 rewards seats left" - so why don't these show up when searching for 2 J seats at once?

given there are 5 of us travelling, it seems there is zero chance of using miles for this award - even on a 2/3 split on separate flights?

There is usually a lot of J availability if you book through the Enrich programme, as their redemption tickets book into D and above. Partner redemptions into MH book into I inventory, so much less availability. Your best bet for scoring 5 tickets is to do it through Enrich.

No enrich points here nor any likelihood of getting any in the short or medium term

You get 1000 when you join and that's all you need.

yeah but i read availability being where you are redeeming Enrich miles not just looking at their website

I could get 1000 and join but even if I find availability as Enrich member, it won't be available to me as AAdv member.

1000 is minimum you need for points plus pay redemptions.

But it would be available to you as an enrich member with 1000 points.

so what you can see on BA access is exactly the same as what is available to AA?

Umm, randomly plugged in some dates for 2, could not find anything.
