Why not book and then wait to see what happens? Worst case scenario they cancel and there is no penalty for cancellation.. why glad not to book? Lol I'm certainly glad I booked and looking forward to what the outcome is. No harm done.

No penalty for cancellation?

Were the fares that you booked In fare buckets that enabled free cancellation, straight back onto your Credit card?

I think he's saying if it's a mistake fare (and extra payment is required), the airline/OTA is obliged to offer the option to cancel for free instead of pay more.

If QF decide not to honour it, why would there be a penalty for me? I'm not the one cancelling it, they are.

Is there a single person out there that didn't think these fares were a mistake? It's all over the internet. I was even tempted to book to BKK but didn't want to tie up my money for a few hundred dollars saving that is not likely to be honoured.

Good luck if they are honoured but I wouldn't be holding my breath.

potentially quite a few people may not think this was a mistake.

it ties in with the reduction on fuel surcharges. It is not hugely below the United $990 fare, by the time you take off fuel, you might be in the ball park.

it isn't uncommon for emails regarding Qantas sales to arrive sometime after the sale has started... sometimes you get an email a few hours or a day later... so finding the fare without a major advertisement isn't particularly unusual.

the fare is probably not a mistake at all... just the total price may not be what the airline intended (by the time they add all their charges). but that's something that will need to be fully explained.

if this was a staff fare... it may be a mistake. but we don't know.

its no where near as clear as Swiss offering $150 fares to travel Singapore airlines suites SIN-ZRH connecting to Swiss First across the Atlantic. Some argued in that case that it was possibly Swiss' answer to ryanair's £1 fares... but for first class.

that didn't gain much traction.

An update for you savvy AFFers celebrating Xmas in July with these mistake fares: they’re not valid and have been removed from sale. We’re currently following up affected bookings.

Sorry to be the "fun police" on this occasion...

Not "fun police" so much as the one that had to deliver the bad news. Quite often yo deliver good news here too, so it all balances out.

But we are appreciative that you have commented on this so quickly after the event. Whether members of AFF or not, if people want to take their case for a clear mistake fare further, so be it. We are at least thankful you have given us guidance.

Chicka will be happy she missed out at the end.

Regarding the cancellations, the fare I booked on O this morning still has the option to cancel with no penalty.

if the airline cancels the fare, the money is refunded in total... no cancellation fees.
But when are you likely to see the full refund? It won't be immediately. Most people don't need that headache. Some love to play the game in the hope they win.

Interesting that some of these mistake fares were booked in fare buckets with no penalty for cancellations..... Certainly no problem for the consumer.

On a side note Did anyone book a mistake fare from EK & what has been said on these ?
Are the EK mistake fares still valid?

On another side note...... I'm seeing 155 people browsing this thread currently...... These mistake fares have Certainly drawn attention from far & wide :p

Were any fares available through .au websites? Assuming not, the main cost for having these fares cancelled (if credit card has already been charged), is from the banks -their 3% fx fee on the way out and their 3% as the money comes back in.

I just got a new email Vayama/Budget air with a Qantas reservation number. I was able to view my fare on the Qantas website, add my FF number, select a vegetarian meal etc... Hoping that's a good sign.

I got mine via Kayak.com.au so booked in AU$ and skipped the booking fee with AmEx.

That would be automated. QF and the OTAs will need to discuss the cancellation notifications and policies and its the middle of the night US time.
