This is why Y+ (at least, Qantas' version of Y+) is wonderful. You don't get the skybed or the lounge (assuming no status), but you do get a comfy seat with legroom, decent service and plenty of food and booze. All for significantly less than a J seat. If you manage to get seats in a sale - all the better!

(Typing as a convert after a fortituous plane swap moved my seat from Y to Y+ :))

I love Y+ in the QF planes, traveled a number of times due to Op-Up's etc. But i have yet to see any reasonable cost for it and i figure if i am going to pay double the whY price i may as well pay triple for J if that make sense. When BA priced WT+ at a better rate i used to fly it a lot paid.

Also whY on a 3:30pm flight to Singapore that gets in at 9:30pm is a completely different proposition to the return flight that leaves at 19:45 and gets in at OMG o'clock (6am?) where if you don't sleep you day i ruined.

If you prefer to spend less and go more often, then more power to you. What annoys me is people who moan (I'm looking at YOU, Skytrax report-writers and contributors to the letter-pages in the SMH travel guide) about how uncomfortable Y is. It's called economy, which implies that it's cheap. It doesn't take a Nobel Laureate to calculate that if you buy a AU$1100 return fare between SYD and JFK, you're not going to be flying in style. If you want a first-class ride, buy a first-class ticket. Otherwise just do as the many Y-flyers on this board do - smile sweetly, pop a Halcion, and be glad that you're not spending your vacation in an on-site caravan at Lakes Entrance.

Well said!

I agree also. I am only QF Silver and fly to USA/Canada every 18 months or so, and when I do, I go J or F. In stead of having several trips cramped in Y, I would rather wait for the good things in life, but then everyone to their own.

I have ambivalent feelings about this.:-|

On one hand, you can usually avoid long economy check in queues, get to go to a lounge, get a nice comfortable seat onboard, perhaps get a better meal or two, and be among the first ones to get off the plane. No one reclining into your face! Ha ha...

On the other hand, the "special feeling" does wane after a few trips. The cost is significantly higher. And this extra cost is really just for some hours on the plane and at the airport. The same cost could pay for a week or two at a five star hotel.
I've only had one overseas trip that I flew business so that 'special feeling' hasn't worn off!

I don't get that special feeling when flying JCL per se, it's more like a basic standard of travel that I feel I need and will gladly pay for. I fly FCL less often so that special feeling does come about every once a while, especially when it's QF F. :)

I was implying that the flight itself (whether whY/whY+/JCL/FCL) is as much a highlight of my trip as, say, the shopping and nightlife at the destination. :)

Yeah same here, I love flying!

I go overseas 2-3 times a year and haven't' had to endure Y for many years now. Domestic flights are in Y as I don't see the point for flights under 4 hours!

Using both Amex points and paid travel works well for me.

The deals out there for J class travel at the moment are great, helping to earn more FF points for when prices return to normal!

What's wrong with Lakes Entrance :?:  :D

Whats right with it !!! hahaha, i actually like the place but i would hate to be in a caravan park ! and its full of bogans :D
Actually i prefer Metung, a nice place to holiday. Pity its so much busier now, but good places that will happen.

Makes perfect sense - though to give you an example of what I meant, I've seen a QF premium economy fare return to the US come in at just shy of $3k in a sale - if I had managed to get leave approved in time, it would have been in my "my bookings" page. If I had to pay what they normally charge (and wasn't able to put up with Y) then I'd be looking for a discount J seat instead. ;)

I guess it is easier for me as Lakes is only a one hour drive and Metung is even closer. I can go home after :!:
