Hi there.

Bit of a challenge and happy to pay $40 for a good solution.

I am looking to take a holiday with my wife and 6mo baby. I am hoping to utilise Velocity FF points for most of the trip and have a bank of around 500k. Would be good to avail of guaranteed reward seats I guess. We are happy to travel in Y but if PE or J is better value then happy to do so and probably easier with baby. Also if Y is affordable and points are better used to upgrade then that would work as well. Happy to transfer points to SQ KF.

We'll be travelling from Melbourne and need to be in Munich on 18/08. We would then look to fly back to Mel around 8 Sept. We would ideally come home via Singapore with a 36-48 hour stop over but not essential.

I am WP and will still be at time of travel so would be good to avail of lounges along the way for convenience.

Let me know if I am missing any details.

Thanks.

Going over, MEL-AUH-MUC in J on 16/08 is available for the 3 of you - 250,000 points required. Can book via the VA website. WP should get you the F lounge in AUH.

Coming home, MUC-SIN-MEL in J is available with a 12 hour stopover, departing on the 6/9, having all day on the 7th, then leaving on the night of the 7th arriving on the 8th.

There are some options for a longer stopover in SIN, but the flights out of MUC are quite full - how about leaving from ZRH on the 5th?

Looks like 218,000 points coming back, though it doesn't seem to allow me to add an infant - I've not tried to fly with an infant using Krisflyer.

So all doable, on pretty much the dates you want.

<Edit> Assumed you wanted to be back in MEL by the 8th. If leaving on the 8th you can fly MUC-SIN and then fly SIN-MEL on the 10th for example. To do this for the least points you'll need to call Kriisflyer to book, paying to add a stopover to a saver award.

<Edit 2> Looks like Krisflyer don't make it easy with an infant - you may need to either pay 10% of the adult fare so the infant has a seat or book another redemption seat (which you won't have the points for).

Thanks very much greenfish

A couple of questions:

  1. Outbound all makes sense and looks like a few options
  2. Flying home from Zurich is fine - really anywhere within similar distance of Munich would be suitable. Shorter the better. We are likely however to be connecting from the south of Italy or Croatia to departing airport - which in that case Rome could be beneficial. Is that an option via Singapore? I can see it is fine on Etihad and can be booked on VA site.
  3. Ideally we would be back in Melbourne on the 10/11th of Sept so dates have some flexibility in them
  4. Would you suggest this is a good use of points?
  5. For the 218k return seats I presume I would need to transfer to KrisFlyer and book via them? Is that correct?
  6. Finally - Am I correct in saying that no charge for infant on Etihad but there is a cost on Singapore?

Thanks again!

Simon

Simon, I'll answer more completely later, but some quick answers:

2. Rome is an option on SQ, but they don't have a daily service, and it looks to be chokka around your dates. Would Milan be an option?
4. It is a very good use of points. The only alternative in terms of upgrades is to transfer to SQ and then upgrade - but you have to buy SQ flexi fares, which are expensive
5. Yes, you need to transfer to Krisflyer - and you won't be able to complete the booking online due to the stopover and the infant.
6. That appears to be the case - I haven't tried flying with an infant on either airline using points and my youngest is now 8 :)

A question for you - how important is the Singapore stopover?

David

Singapore stop over not critical - would be a added bonus. Was also probably more leaning to SQ due to the product - I haven't experienced J on Etihad but have on SQ.
Milan would probably be fine I would say however Rome will be a closer flight for us.

I guess the ultimate outcome will be to minimise any additional cost for the infant and presuming the Etihad J product is pretty good?

Thanks again!

From what I've read, the new hard product on EY is good - but if you fly to / from MUC the segment to MUC will be an A330 - which doesn't sound so good. Singapore is a fantastic airport to transit, Abu Dhabi reports not so good - though the F lounge sounds nice.

A benefit of flying EY is the very low co-payment; I've just booked 4 ZRH-BNE one way flights via the VA website on EY with a co-payment of maybe $70 each. I've also just booked SQ AMS BNE - the copayment was nearer $500 each way. And it appears that the infant will fly free on EY.

Hi David. I believe I owe you some $$ for your assistance - apologies - we have just had our first child so have been a bit pre-occupied. Let me know how this part works. Cheers.
