I have a feeling that is not going to last very long, let alone who is going to side with the strikers. Isn't the idea with a hunger strike is that whoever is striking is trying to gain sympathy against their oppressors by means of imposing a human welfare obligation upon them?

Well said and not sure where an action like that will get them any sympathy atall. OT im not sure if it a particular racial minority goping down this track as this is the only way thek know how to protest.

But really there is no place for this kind of protest anywehere in Australia.

The reforms have passed Parliament. This is really good news and had been looking unlikely with last minute campaigns by Labour and independant MP Geoff Shaw.
Taxi drivers to strike after controversial laws pass

Now lets hope that these changes actually get implemented and not delayed or put on hold or whatever other excuse politicians can come up with.

I think that's a completely unrelated issue...?

Any solution that doesn't satisfy all parties is no solution. Well, not one that will last.

Rather than scrap the short-fare system, if it was being abused, it should have been enforced. Penalise those who are breaking the rules, not those who are following them. Other airports have shortie systems and they work fine.
So who is supposed to be policing the short-fare system and why are they still employed?

I think way too many people have "permanent" jobs in this country and do nothing to justify holding that job. I thought this was eradicated a long time ago.

I also had a guy a couple of months ago in Melbourne heading to the airport very early morning who was playing Bollywood tunes very loudly on the CD player the whole way there. At some point on the tullamarine freeway, while swerving in and out of lanes he changed CDs and said to me, "hope you don't mind the music mate. I need it to stay awake." That was reassuring....
