Am on the CX 7.40am MEL-HKG flight in a few days. I understand the lounge opens at 5am - I assume this is just the QF J lounge? How busy is it likely to be at this time of morning and what sort of breakfast will I be able to get for myself?

Also what are people's experience with immigration queues at this time?

I assume you are flying J? CX has their own lounge as far as I can see, though I have not used it. FWIW, the only eligible flights for the QF lounge around that time are 738s to AKL and WLG, and I think one or two JQ flights, which will most likely not have many lounge-eligible pax. I have never seen the MEL J lounge overly busy, though I have not necessarily used it at peak times (whenever they may be).

CX have a lounge but it's nothing special at all. If you have any OW status use the QF lounges. I took that CX flight a month ago and used the F lounge, both were open and not busy at all.

I'm only QFF Silver right now, so am I able to use QF lounge or am I locked into the CX facility? I am flying J.

Not sure what day you are flying but if its sunday remember the clocks go forward so its 8.40am. I was thinking this because I am on the CX flight on Sunday morning!

OT - Thanks for reminding me about clocks going forwards on Sunday, heading to Bathurst on Sunday and had arranged to pick ppl's up at 2:30am... A time which will not exist.

Actually I think you'll find that you need to have status to choose which airline's lounge you enter. If you're flying J or F without status then you are restricted to the airline's lounge.
maybe not: (Lounge access - oneworld)
oneworld lounge access for First Class or Business Class travellers
Indulge yourself before departure in a wider range of airport lounges when you fly First Class or Business Class with a oneworld member airline.

  • Customers flying First or Business Class have access to the equivalent class of lounge regardless of their frequent flyer status. First Class passengers may have access to a Business Class or frequent flyer lounge if a First Class lounge is not available.
  • First Class passengers may be accompanied by one guest travelling on a flight operated and marketed by a oneworld airline.

Sounds like QF lounge is definitely better. Might check out both if possible to compare food offerings etc. What are loads like on this CX flight normally? Am thinking of which one is likely to give me more space.

No - There was a time when OW did have that applied, however it didn't last very long at all.
