Rialto Tower
Southbank - ferry / water taxi to Williamstown for lunch
St Kilda Esplanade market on Sunday
Healesville Sanctuary under rated for kids
You have weeks of activities Duffa - and lots of unique experiences.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Mornington Peninsular to check out the Pinot Noir

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Yarra Valley - MY first choice would be a tasting session at Domaine Chandon (actually I think you may be able to dine there) Sitting in the restaurant with the vines sloping away and the Warburton Ranges in the distance.....absolutely superb - you would not want to live anywhere else but Melbourne! A little down the road is Bella Verdura which is a fabulous Italian restaurant .In Healesville - the Healesville Hotel has super food. Also try Innocent Bystander - a really buzzy spot - wine tasting, lovely food, cheese/deli/bread/pizza, all terrific. If they are older/more conservative, maybe the RACV Country Club for lunch. Seeing native animals at the Sanctuary is always fun.Try the Mornington Peninsula - so many wineries and fab places to eat - Port Phillip Estate, Montalto, Dromana Estate. Flinders Hotel or the Portsea pub both have good food, and the scenery is always lovely. Go stgrawberry or cherry picking at Red Hill. Call in at Heronswood at Dromana, stunning gardens. Point Nepean national park, you can hire bicycles to ride out to the point. Catch the ferry to Queenscliff. In Melbourne, the NGA or Ian Potter, a boat ride up the Yarra, the Museum, the Aquarium, the Zoo - Werribee Park is super fun, do the open plains zoo or the Mansion, lovely rose garden, and you can eat there too. The Botanical Gardens, Williamstown, Lygon Street. It';s always interesting to look at the food available in other cities/countries so I recommend South Melbourne or Prahran market.Try some of the bayside eateries - Donovan's would always be my personal favourite.

Does this help??

Other places in the Yarra Valley worth visiting:
St Huberts
Yarra Valley Dairy
Meletos for lunch

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I feel ashamed to have forgotten all of these things to do. Such a great place. Thanks for all the reminders and the new suggestions - especially those of which including relaxing and imbibing!

Re: The totally off-topic thread

If you have the time the Great Ocean Road is a great trip

These two are the winners for me. Love Donovans :)

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Rialto > Eureka ??

Although FWIW, you can get up Rialto for free by going to Lui bar.
(link - Lui Bar Official Website)

Eureka you have to pay admission and that rubbish.

By the way, the same technique works in Sydney at the Tower. For the price of a scotch (or a beer, but let's be civilised) you can sit in the revolving bar for as long as you like and look out the windows. Takes about an hour to do one pass. The drink will be less than half the price of going up to the public gallery, and all you miss is the crowds and expensive pay-binoculars. The bar is on the lowest level, but that's largely irrelevant in terms of view. Best time: about 30 minutes before sunset, and you just relax as you revolve around the city.

Or stay, and after a few more drinks the city will revolve around **you**.

Back in Melbourne: the exec lounge at the Crown hotel has a great view of everything to the west, north and east of Southbank. Another nice place to take guests if you can get you and them in.

They have already planned that part of the trip, quite independent of me. And a stay and dinner at the Royal Mail Hotel at Dunkeld.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

New question
Have lived in Victoria for 25 years
Have overseas friends family visiting Melbourne pre Christmas - first time in Oz
What should I do to keep them interested apart from get on the Dom pre midday (a la Cruiser Elite!!:))..... MCG tour, the old gaol, parliament house?
Nights aren't a problem as we have booked 3 fabulous places for dinner - Melbourne does NOT come up short there. But what to do in daytime???
Harbour bridge climb? Opera House? Captain Cook harbour cruise? Red bus? We don't have those here!

Please help.

D

* An escorted tour of Melbourne's lanes and alleys -- see tourist office on Federation Square. Free of charge IIRC.

* Ferry trip from St Kilda pier to Williamstown and back, with light rail to St Kilda. Or drive to Williamstown and wander around an historic seaport and then do the ferry ride.

* Yarra sightseeing cruise

I did this a while back and it was interesting. Not free:

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Yarra Valley Wine tour based on the early Dom suggestion.....

Hotel Sofitel Toilet View (Melbourne)
Hotel Sofitel Toilet View (Melbourne) - Indoor Activities -

The galleries at the Fed and NGV. scienceworks. Luna Park. Flemington race course (should be a xmas race day) and Footscray Park/Maribyrong river.
Footscray market, the donuts at Footscray station and 8 bit burger. Bathing Boxes at Brighton beach.
Take a ferry or boat ride to Gem Pier and Nelson Place in Williamstown and explore Gem Pier which has HMAS Castlemaine permanently moored and during the winter months there are tours of the Sea Shepherd ships that have returned from Antarctica.
Fairy Park in Anakie
RAAF Museum (Point Cook)
Melbourne Star Observation Wheel.
Sovereign Hill
William Ricketts Sanctuary (Mount Dandenong)

What to show 'em in Melbourne

I suggest something so close most miss it.

A walk around the Domain taking in sights such as the Myer music Bowl, the Botanic gardens, the Shrine of remembrance, monuments, memorials, etc..

With a nice day, comfortable shoes, perhaps stopping for lunch, after doing this you'll wonder why you only allocated four hours rather than most of the day. ;)

More information including brochures, maps and guides can be found at the i joint at Federation Square or online here:

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I have admitted my shame in a previous post!!!
Already planning all these great activities.....

Can you plan them and then keep the itinerary handy for when I bring the wife in April. Not that I expect you to entertain US as well. But since you're doing all this homework already :)

Sidenote: no red bus? Even Perth has one of these.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Is the red bus one of those double decker tour buses? If so, yes Melbourne has that.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

There is a free walking tour that leaves from the library, its quite good, covers the history (gaol) a few of the parks and famous buildings and statues, art lane ways, some different food and drink suggestions.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Didn't see it mentioned... but City Circle Tram, with stops at the Vic Markets and stuff along the way.
