Melbourne Restaurant

For reasonable prices with enthusiastic (if somewhat novice) service you can't really go past the "Angliss Restaurant".

It's a "Hospitality Training Restaurant" and you are served by students. It is extremely reasonably priced at $8 each for entrée/desserts &$17 for mains ($2.50 for tea and coffee) or three courses including tea and coffee for $33. It does have a slightly limited menu

It's fully licensed, no BYO.

Criteria are:

walkable from Crowne Plaza so I'd think CBD or Southbank. Maybe Docklands at a pinch. Going to the burbs the next night.

cuisine style is not important as long as its carnivorous. Seafood at a pinch. Ethnicity doesn't matter.

reasonably priced. I looked at Ezard which we like but don't want to pay in the $40's for mains. The Press Club maybe (which is virtually in the $40's)?

not too loud or super trendy (therefore probably not the sort if place Keith would like. :shock: :mrgreen: ) Emphasis on the food.

Agree with this.

The main issue is the quality of the meat has gone well down - the meat is now no better than anywhere else, but you still pay that (modest) premium - it's no longer worth it, and I feel their service has also dropped off. Last time we went we were very disappointed, and other friends who (still0 live in Melbourne have also stopped going back.

We routinely went to the Toorak Rd restaurant, but occasionally the cbd one as well.


Sounds like we need to try grill room!:mrgreen:

I was just in the said republic on Anzac weekend! Arrived into MEL to be greeted by blustery winds and teeming rain - the only thing that was missing was probably some hail or even snow (but that doesn't really happen in MEL, right?) ... and possibly a more convoluted hiding place for the front of the new Hilton Melbourne South Wharf. :rolleyes:

Next time I'm in MEL I'll take you up on your offer, munitalP. Do be warned, though, that there have been several places in the world that cannot compete with a good steak from The Breakfast Creek Hotel in Brisbane. Many have tried, and failed........

Ah, with the wooden keg beer as well. Do you enjoy the xx_ Sparkling Ale too?

You might not be aware that there is a xx_ sparkling ale that is made by Castlemaine - it's available (as far as I am aware) only at the Breakfast Creek Hotel and the Castlemaine brewery. It's historical in nature, being the beer they brought out in 1878 (it predates xx_X which was introduced in 1916).

I quite liked the xx_, actually.

Great suggestion on William Angliss Serfty as such things should be supported so we decided to have lunch there on Monday before the flight home.

Ate at William Angliss last November at a function (in the function room rather than regular restaurant, but same setup as far as staff etc. goes) and recall being impressed by what they did for the dollars involved.

Personally I only care about the food/service/ambience etc but in light of the above, I might hasten to add that proceeds from Fifteen go towards their on-the-job program training unemployed youth to become professional chefs. :)

Well I have probably by an accident of timing got myself an unexpected deal. Monday is one of their special lunches. The chef is Jocelyn Riviere from the Courthouse. It's not the $17.00 mains it normally is but it's $70.00 per head for 3 courses including wine. Looks like a good deal for a special meal and so we should role out to MEL for the trip home. I guess we only get to Melbourne occasionally lol

Well I sort of fell into the reservation when the bright young gal on the phone seemed to be so enthusiastic. And as I said, I only get to Melbourne now and again :D 500 metres is nothing..you should come too! Note I'm not offering to shout you :shock:
