Melbourne Terminal 1

Just to revive an old thread. What on earth is going on in Melbourne T1 with the shops?
So many places closed and not returning over the past few weeks and months, what an embarrassment for Qantas who still 'own' the Terminal lease.
No more:
-Lotto
-Australian Way
-Qudos Bank
-One out of two Sunglass Hut gone
-Cafe's closing early on the way to G21-30

They were probably not making enough money, its said that rent at airports are very expensive, and things at airports cost more than they would cost in the city or away from the airport.
If you look at it, some of those shops did not have a lot of people buying from them, people just go in and have a look see and come out.
I fly a lot, and have not seen people carry paper bags with clothing shop names, Krispy Kreme was the fad all those years ago though, and that was carried a lot around to ADL till it opened franchises here.
Captive audience and all that.
$4 for a 600ml bottle of Mt Franklin water, just having a look after a flight has left, and you see whats in the recycling bin, or on the chairs left by leaving flyers. $3.50 elsewhere from other vending machines away from airports.
Qudos bank, maybe QF decided that having a Sydney branch and call centre is enough.
MEL int T2 has also had a lot of money spent on it too.

....

About 15 - 20 years ago, Australia Post pulled out of the MEL international terminal T2 (its outlet was where that luggage shop is now, next to the foreign exchange bureau). At the time it commented that MEL management's rent charged was the highest of any Australian Oz Post shop.

Qantas or MEL, landlords are greedy, though you are correct in that changes to airport buildings do not come cheaply.

Those of us who prefer a good range and low prices shop at Woolworths and bring items with us (save for international security, due to the LAGs rule that as some comment has more to do with show than true security).

It's a pity Qudos (although I still it QF Credit Union) closed. I found it a convenient location.

One might think that because it's allied to Qantas, it would either not have to pay rent or receive a heavily discounted rate. Obviously not.

OT: Qantas when it changed the name from Qantas credit union, or at some time, said Qantas itself wasn't a bank/wasn't a deposit taking institution, so it changed its name from the credit union to Qudos.
This was all the rage when credit unions decided to be become banks about 18/24 months ago.
CPSCU (SA) became Beyond Bank.
Heritage was a credit union, and is now a bank. They issue the Qantas travel money card, so Qantas itself does not accept any deposits.
