Melbourne to Tokyo via Sydney Question

Interesting as when I called Qantas they said its enough time!! They shouldn't be offering it when booking
The connection probably fulfils what they call Minimum Connection Time and therefore ‘legal’. That means it can be done but question then is do you want to do it?

I’m one of elsnshin’s type A, a bit of a worrier and want to know everything will go to plan without rushing. I’ve not gone close to missing a flight in over 1,500. If you are his type B, you’ll probably be fine.

According to EF, QF426 has been an average of 20 minutes late each day over the past two months. Maybe time to dust off those running shoes. ;)

I would never book connections that tight anyway, but that’s just me. Also, there’s eight earlier QF flights that morning, so you need to be rather confident of a successful connection if booking that flight out of MEL.

If it meets MCT then it’s “legal”. Perhaps not the sort of connection that some of us would be comfortable with, especially if not familiar with the terminals

OP has said he/she is on an award tix, so maybe no choice, I haven't checked the dates lately, but sometimes, that is all QF offers with a set number of points needed.
Maybe the connection time combo, is the one with lets say, 100,000 Y redemption award seat, return, MEL - SYD - HND/NRT and back.

Even easier with awards. Use multi-city and choose the time you want to fly rather than forced short connections.

Just called Qantas they said they can't change my flight as it shows on time :(
Qantas seamless transfer is also every 30 min?
As others have pointed out, the call centre won’t help you here. They see it as a ‘legal’ connection, and any change you want to make now would incur change fees and costs.

The only real way to do it - and it’s not guaranteed - is to follow the advice outlined above… turn up at MEL airport very early and ask, as part of the checkin process, if you can get on an earlier flight.

Checkin staff have huge capability on the day of travel to keep people moving and make connections.

The snag could be if all flights are really packed. You might have to end up on your originally ticketed flight.
