jb747 (or anybody else with the knowledge), why are there no waypoints between PER and half way across the Indian Ocean to South Africa? The lowest one I can find is Polum (see this SkyVector map)

I can only find Gugon (which is due west of PER, on a direct track to Africa), but that is ~2,000nm from PER. I would have thought there would be ones tracking PER/JNB all the way

Wow - I was out of range then in the car all afternoon so had a LOT of catching up to do. Heard the news on ABC 702 as it broke and the press conference. What amazed me is the guy from the acronymic organisation (John Young) talked all about what they thought they had and what they were doing but it was only when a journo asked specifics about the objects that he told them the 24 metre estimated size of the larger object and slightly (or somewhat) smaller other object. It was crucial info as it could have been a couple of seat cushions (that's what the journo asked). 24 metres puts it well over a shipping container, a typical bit of flotsam, and into the range of chunks of aircraft.

Anyway I just thought it odd at the time he didn't say how big the pieces were. Forest/trees or some other more suitable analogy.

Note the images are from 4 days ago, so it may take a while to find them after drift.

The Chinese ship was too far south when the coordinates were give out at 44.02 S.The ship was at 51.52S but now is at 51.32S.So could well be one of the ships AMSA has asked to proceed to the area.

Images from FOUR DAYS AGO?

There was just one minor detail left out of the press conference... The image was taken 4 DAYS AGO!

After all the hulpa made out of nothing over the last 10 days, I was hoping for a glimmering of sanity amongst the speculation. Unfortunately Australia just added to the hype.

Shame, shame, shame.

How long is an exit slide/liferaft? Must be around 24m x 5m.

EDIT: Is a 777 slide also a liferaft?

Time lag between recording equipment and analysis of the recorded imagery?

Maybe needed that time to check the data thoroughly before confirming that it was highly possible to be debris, rather than jump the gun, al la the Chinese and state as fact that "MH370 Debris Found"?

Ah but of course, the Government knew EXACTLY the position of these objects amongst the massive search area they have been given, and kept this all hush hush for the past three days til now *rolls eyes*

/sarasm <_< Honestly....

On a more serious note, I do hope this is something of note - Really meaning, I do hope this is the aircraft. One step closer to figuring out what the heck happenrnd... Got really excited when I started reading the headlines about this latest development.

It is pretty easy to criticise without knowing the full specifics isn't it?

No criticism or sarcasm of the search efforts at all.

Total criticism and sarcasm of the fact that the Press Conference made no mention at all that the data was 4 days old. Just a SMALL oversight??????

They could have said that they reviewed data from 4 days ago and on best research were now searching a specific area.

What they said was they had new information and based on that they were searching a new area. Creates the idea that the new information was current from today.

Not what ASMA should be doing in light of all the contradicted stories to date.

Clear current information or keep you mouth shut!

don't get your point?

omitting that the data is 4 days old and creating the illusion that they are acting on current data isn't misleading?

Is that not what the malaysian's are accused of doing and do you think it is ok that australia is doing the same thing?

As others have said, there's likely a large lag between when images are captured and when they're analysed. With such a large search area there would likely be a massive amount of images to be examined.

I do wonder what technology is available to intelligence agencies these days, I don't think it's extraordinary to imagine there's software available which can automatically analyse satellite images and flag areas of interest?

Yeah. No.

Analyzing satellite imagery is part of my day job as a geologist. Maybe the media comments could have been worded better, but here's the reality...

Satellite takes images, someone downloads images, someone does post-processing of images to make atmospheric corrections etc., then someone analyses the images and reports the findings. You do not get to analyse the images straight after they're snapped by the satellite. 4 days is an incredibly rapid turnaround time to be honest, especially given the size of the search area.

In terms of the geophysics, you can generate gravity maps from satellite data, so it's possible. Just unlikely to give you the resolution that you'd need to find a plane. My satellite gravity data is on ~2km spacing. It's fantastic, but it's not going to find a plane. To get the geophysics of a high enough resolution to find a plane, you'd have to have a very small search area (probably not much more than 100km x 100km), otherwise it becomes impractical, both physically and financially, because you'd have to send planes or boats out to collect it.

I think you are a geoscientist, from other thread discussions? Like me - of 30+ years standing, including deep water marine geophysical surveys (looking for minerals, not planes) :D I would never have considered gravity as a tool here, either satellite or surface.

With the trail likely cold (no matter where the plane ended up at deep sea), I've been trying to think what geophysics would be useful. You would have to do towed array magnetics in the first instance no matter how remote the likelihood of success as its relatively cheap and rapid to do. I've forgotten if marine EM is a practical tool in deep water. Again, assuming the plane is in pieces its hard to see that any piece of the plane would produce a meaningful response at depth.

I think AF 447 was ultimately found by probability analysis and eyeballs in a deep submersible. Reckon it'll be the same with this one unless they get really lucky with the (presumed) wreckage leaking debris for a little while yet.

i think that at this point in time, given the shenanigans that have gone on, now is no the time to prematurely release information.

get it right, once and once only

the whole world is looking at australia right now, with respect because they realise we know how to do SAR.

we have already made one huge gaff that could have been avoided.

i just hope politics doens't get in the way and more regretful statements to the worlds medai are made.
