Apologise in advance for thread creep, but I have been reading recent comments on Skytrax today about MH Aust-KL route and KL to London being a bit ordinary on service and infact running out of meals in J so that those that did not get served early missed out on a feed altogether. Also talk on other routes (HK) of a/c having old, tired interiors. I would be interested to hear comments from some of those who have recently flown.

I have always had good experiences and I do the trek from SYD to Europe about twice a year (in J). If you don't want to miss out on meals, you can always order from the chef-on-call service. As for old aircraft, most of these have been replaced already. Only occasionally will you be unlucky enough to strike an old plane. For example, HKG only started getting the A380. Almost all A330s are new and the majority of their B738s are new as well. Only the B772s have the old interiors now (and some of the older B738s). Any Aust-London route will be on new planes. You'll get the new A333s from Aust to KUL and then the A380 from KUL to LHR.

I flew MH on Friday KUL-BNE in J and every seat in J was occupied. The meal served is a brunch thing. As I had eaten in the lounge I asked for the grill but was told no...none left. What is left ? I ask.
Pancakes or scrambled egg was the answer. I tried the scrambled egg with boiled potato and a sort of a sausage but after one mouthful I left the whole thing. It was most unappetising. My J meal therefore was a croissant.

About 2 hours before landing they served chicken and beef satays which were very good.

Not my best J flight

MH are offering some very good J prices at the moment and I think the premium cabins will be quite full

I have not flown MH long haul business but I have flown MH short haul business and the service is more than adequate although my expectations are not great.

To date I have flown the 734's, 738's and A330's and will be adding the 380 next month. The cabins do not look dated to me and the seats are OK.

On one of the flights I was turning around and the same crew were operating the return. During the outbound flight I asked for a Baileys and was also served another by the CSM and when we were disembarking I told the CSM I will be joining them for return flight to which he replied "I will prepare a Baileys for you". Sure enough when I boarded and took my seat the CSM asked if I would like a Baileys and prepared on for me. I did not think MH did alcoholic pre-departure beverages but I have managed to be served one.

Here's a geek question: what are their amenity kits like?

I flew MH J hkg-kul a380 on the weekend, staff were robotic and ran out of meals before getting to me (I was in first row of j) only had a choice of vegetarian or some rubbish fish dish, all I got was a sorry so I made it known I wasn't very happy as a fully paid j passenger and a OWE on their flagship plane. After that he came back with a chicken dish which I suspect was either a y meal plated on a business plate or a first class meal, either way it was cough. No greeting, no mentioning of my name only sir, and no special attention. Was expecting more being that they're new entrants to OW seems they think OW is just that they have to offer priority checkin and boarding that's it.. will be sending some constructive feedback to them.

Otherwise j hard product on a380 was great

I have only flown short haul so cannot answer that question as I do not expect an amenity kit for that length of flight.

The J amenity kits are ok. They're Clarins products, which I actually really like. IIRC, there's lip balm, hand cream, moisturising cream, socks, toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash and hairbrush. I can't remember if an eye mask is in the kit but you can ask for one.

I found MH to be solid. Some good service, but not quite up to SQ standards. But hey when using 38k cc points to fly MEL-KUL which is 7k less than on SQ MEL-SIN, or 22k less than on QF then it's a good deal.

It sounds like meal availability may be an issue, this can be overcome at certain ports (certainly MEL, SYD and KUL) by pre-ordering from more extensive menu

Surprised no one's mentioned the satays yet!

The chicken satays are fantastic and the satay sauce is probably one of the best that I've tasted anywhere (and I should know). I'm a regular long-haul J traveller with MH and I have yet to have a bad experience. Maybe I'm just lucky.

The eye mask is banded with the socks and there is also some hand sanitizer. The Colgate toothpaste is the biggest (small-20g) tube I have seen in an amenity kit.

I forgot about the hand sanitizer! My mum loves those. Anyway, I think the J kit is better than the F kit. MH are now using Bvlgari, which are not actually very good. They used to use La Prairie, which were excellent products. They really should have stayed with those for F.

They're OK, and much better than any satay I've ever had in Australia. Not quite up to the standard at my favourite vendor at one particular hawker stall in Singapore, but nevertheless they're pretty good for serving at 35,000 ft!

Totally agree about the MH satay, I even asked for a couple more....no problem

I think it's 34K points for AUS-KUL in J.

With SQ it's 46,500 so that's 12,500 difference, nothing to sneeze at.
