Mid air collision at Dallas air show

Looking at the bank angle it appears the cobra may not have seen the B-17, or they did originally then lost it in the turn and assumed they positioned ahead of it due to its faster speed.

Tragic loss all round. The B-17 crew really couldn’t do anything after impact. Terrible way to go.

Air shows can be tricky places for aircraft.

A lot of General aviation aircraft flying in and out (why drive - it’s an air show) in tight patterns often with more than one aircraft landing on same runway at the same time (landing spots displaced by some distance - aircraft a lands on yellow dot, aircraft b lands on green dot, aircraft c lands on red dot - all on the same runway).

ATC communication often one way because of the number of aircraft - something like this from 4:37 into video

It's difficult to say what has happened here. The 'cobra is a lot faster than the B-17, and is belly up the whole time, suggesting that he never saw the Fortress. My first thought was that it was the worst rejoin ever, but I wonder if they were actually operating independently. Another source said that the 'cobra may have been attempting to join up on a Mustang.

Lots of aircraft flying in close proximity over the airport as part of a show. The B17 is the largest aircraft in photo flying from left to right. The Cobra is second from right)

Always an accident waiting to happen
