Hello Everyone,

I'd like to reach out here hoping to get some insights or guidance on how what could be the ideal way to redeem miles.
Here's the context, I'm planning to travel to Europe with my wife later this year. It is likely that we will do SYD-MUC outbound and FCO-SYD inbound.
Unfortunately, I don't have enough miles for business class on all legs (short of 60k). Initial thought was to do:

SYD-SIN premium
SIN-MUC business
FCO-SIN premium
SIN-SYD economy

However, I learnt that you cannot redeem mix class. Unless, I do separate bookings.
Hard for me to see earning 60k additional miles in a short time, so is separate bookings the only way to go here? Or is there any other clever way I am missing?

Also, if it's separate booking, will I need to collect my luggage in Singapore before checking-in to my "connecting" flight?

I'd appreciate your insights!

Or, a little bit outside the box but might work… Saudia has a business class fare, one way, from Singapore to Munich for just AUD1227. Why not buy that sector cheaply, and use the mikes saved to complete the rest of your itinerary on SQ? The Saudia connection is quick with just a little over three hours in Jeddah.

Do you need to apply for an authorisation and/or visa if transferring in JED?

Definitely out of the box! Might need some convincing to the wife for this to happen. 😁

I understand wanting to do the longer leg in business, but one of the best things about business class is not dreading that flight home all through your holidays. So my priority would be allocating points to business class for FCO-SIN-SYD.

Whatever is left over consider a credit card sign on bonus? Would a platinum Amex get you enough points in time?

Consider a cheap flight to any port in Asia (BKK, SIN, CGK, DPS etc) as a cash fare then a redemption from there to Europe. Scoot business (or whatever they call it now) can be good value.

A SQ redemption from Sydney to several Asian ports is the same as SYD to SIN. So experiment with different Asian ports and combinations of redemption SYD-xx_ (Asian port) vs xx_-MUC.

It's complex but a few hours searching can find interesting options and a stopover in a fun port.
