Mixed class award booking (J/Y) on VA/DL

Hi all,

Trying to book an award using Velocity points like this:

SYD-LAX for 2 in J on VA
LAX-PHX for 2 in Y (only because there are no business seats available on this leg) on DL

Cannot book DL awards on the website so gave VA a ring and the agent informed me that because it's a mixed class booking, the LAX-PHX flight will break the fare and I will be charged for it in addition to the SYD-LAX flights. I understand that VA may not allow mixed class award bookings but I was previously told over the phone by an agent that she would be able to 'over-ride' the system and still only charge me 94,000 per passenger as SYD-LAX-PHX falls in the same bracket (7001-8500) as SYD-LAX.

This second agent priced it as 94,000 + 6900.

Is is just a case of HUACA or was the first agent wrong?

Was there any first class award availability on the DL flight? This should price as business, and I have proven that it was possible to book it as such on a standalone flight, but only by staying on the phone a while and providing links to the Velocity website
