Mobile roaming in China

I’ve heard that if you use your international roaming in China, it bypasses the Great Firewall?
In my case I’m with Optus and generally find the mobile roaming to be fantastic. $5 a day for 5GB of data.
Just wondering if this is the case or not?
If not, any recommendations on a good VPN?

That's my understanding. All foreign SIMs or eSIMs will land outside the wall.

Note that this can reportedly be a pain for China payment apps (Alipay and WeChat Money) (slowed) and navigations apps (AMAp and Baidu)

So presumably a seperate eSIM for those would be the go (as per your post here:

eSims, what is your experience.

I just get an eSIM from Trip.com, great speeds and no issues with the firewall. I love reading travellers reviews of hotels in China complaining about the internet!

I'm more concerned that they have no aircon in winter and set the heating to 27 degrees which can't be changed.

Can't say I've had any issues with payment and maps using flexiroam esim.
