I know how to look... and where... I just never find any business class seats with a reasonably close return flight.

You probably need to be looking at travelling later (maybe next year) and it also depends on where and when you are going. I've never had any problems with getting award business flights because I've always booked them about a year in advance. Make sure you're not trying during school holidays or other 'blackout' periods. The other trick is to look at a departure in the nexy few days as seats are released. Keep trying each and every day, all day! You never know when the seats will appear.

There is plenty of availability (especially since loads are so low in Business and First at the moment).

But I suppose you need to have an idea of when you want to go, and a preferred location (eg Asia, North America, Europe, South America etc).

Just some random searches ex Brisbane for May:
May 13 - May 16 BNE-HKG return. (With availability seemingly every 2-4 days in Business).

May 6- 15 BNE-London return (reasonable availability on return, not so much heading there).

North America looks fairly unavailable during May/June (at least Ex-Brisbane).

Where are you departing from?

I just checked ex-SYD and I can see (for May) J flights SYD-LHR on 22/23/26th April + 3/5/6 May, and return availability every day in April + 2/3/5/6/8/9/10/15/16/17/23 May, so seems to be a reasonable number of seats to London.

SYD-LAX is pretty tight with only flights available on 13/14 May and return on 6/1/13 of June

SYD-SIN has heaps of availability (just about every day) over the next month

SYD-BKK has availability over 50% of days (probably 4/5 days each week)

SYD-HKG has availability on 11/13/17 May with return on 13/14/16/17/18/19/21 May

So plenty of J available ex-Syd in the next month. Evidently you are not looking at the same page I am, or you are leaving from somewhere else (telling us might help), or you can fly to Sydney and leave from SYD.
