The UK's biggest peacetime repatriation operation is under way to return 110,000 Monarch Airlines customers after the airline, which employs around 2,750 people, collapsed into administration.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said it has been asked by the Government to charter more than 30 aircraft to bring the passengers back to the UK after the airline failed to renew a crucial licence.

Monarch Airlines goes bust and tells customers don't go to the airport

A rough time ahead for British budget travellers.

Wow, I flew Monarch from Venice to Manchester in July. Dodged a bullet there.
Alitalia, Air Berlin, now Monarch and Ryanair is also in trouble... One can only hope that the 'cheap, cheaper, cheapest' model will finally expose itself as not being sustainable forever.

I always believed and will always believe that there is a market for quality in this business and hope this will start waking up the likes of BA or LH who too often think following the cheapskates is the only way forward. I, for my part, will always happily fork out more money to fly Qantas rather than Jetstar. If that choice is available, that is.

Why BA participates in this race to the bottom amazes me. A once-excellent airline has joined the list of airlines to be avoided where possible

Sad really! Couldn't agree more...
