Hi,

we are moving to QLD and have a one-way Business ticket booked with Qantas. We have up to 160Kg of checked luggage due to Status and Business - I have a 34"Monitor (ultrawide) that I would like to bring to use for work during hotel quarantine. The original package and heaps of bubblewrap are still here, I am just not sure if I can take the monitor and if it will actually get to BNE (from SYD) without major damage. I guess it will be too big to take it as carry-on, right?

Check it in as fragile. If packed properly in the original box, I'd expect it to be fine. If it's good enough for a case of wine, I think a monitor would be ok.

I’ve checked in 2 x 32” monitors in their original packaging PERxMEL-DPO on QF and had no issues

Very jealous……of your move to QLD. Haven’t seen sun for weeks in central Victoria!

When I moved out of my MEL residence last year I shoved a 32" monitor into my luggage. I did not have the original packaging or bubble wrap. I just wrapped it towels put some suits in first and packed the monitor in the middle of the luggage. It arrived undamaged.

Edit: I have been thinking how did I get the 32" monitor to MEL in the first place, from memory I put it in one of those soft suit carriers that are provided when you purchase new suits or jackets that fold into thirds. It did go through the x-ray machine without issue and into the OH bins.

Thanks for the feedback.

Just one more question for the SYD-BNE flight:
We have 5x32Kg checked luggage:
- can we really only have 5 bags up to 32KG each?
- or can we have as many bags as we want but not more than 160Kg total?

E.g. if we have 5 bags, each 25Kg and a Monitor to check in, would that count as in the limit or over as technically 6 items?

You are entitled to the actual amount, so if 5 pieces of baggage, then it's 5 pieces (no matter what the items are).
If you have a kg allowance of say 23kg, then you can have 23, 1kg pieces if wanted. Qantas is the former. (there are two systems for airlines around the world, kg or piece system)

As can you have more than the 5, yes, but you'd be paying for it. If you know you are going to be over the allowance, then pre-purchase and extra piece at half the cost.

Thanks.

Good that I checked as we can have 5 additional bags each (I guess up to 32Kg as we fly business) and they cost either $50 or 8.000 Points.

Domestic within Australia

Additional baggage allowance may be purchased on a piece basis.
A maximum of five additional pieces may be purchased in advance per flight. A maximum weight also applies for each additional piece, which is determined by your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership status:
  • Non-Frequent Flyers and Bronze travelling in Economy - 23kg per piece. If your bag is over this weight (up to 32kg) a heavy charge will apply at the airport.
  • Qantas Platinum, Gold, Silver Frequent Flyers and Qantas Club members travelling in Economy - 32kg per piece.
  • All customers travelling in Business - 32kg per piece.
