More flights to HKG and MNL

Received the email - twice.
A bit like rubbing salt in the wound.
This won't "offer my business more options" as my business is based in Perth.
Maybe the email should have been targetted to the Sydney membership.

Yes agree, I am based in Perth and CX now has 2 flights a day Perth Hong Kong. It would be nice to see the QF return of Perth/Hong Kong. we now have Perth/Sing, which is carrying good loads.

I agree with what some others have said, very good to hear indeed.

I noted that when the financial results were released last month that QF intends to retire one 747 in FY16 - perhaps today's announcement is a precursor for an all A330 double daily frequency on the SYD-HKG route.

Interestingly, 2x A333s (compared to 1x 747) would result in about double the number of economy seats, about the same number of business class seats and a complete loss of premium economy on the route. So, capacity would increase overall, but not in the high-yielding premium cabins.

The potential loss in premium cabin capacity is the main reason I believe QF will stick to the 747 on SYD-HKG, as well as to Tokyo. At least until the 787s arrive. But we'll see.

The return flight virtually mirrors the existing HKG-SYD flight.... wtf why?

Why not schedule an overnight outbound and a daytime return?

THIS!!!

I've been forced onto CX with no evening departure on QF and these new flights wont help. Would have chose QF if I could have departed in the evening.

The fact CX have up-gauged their evening departure (A 330 --> 777) suggests there's a market for an overnight ex-SYD.

Guess aircraft availability and fleet utilisation comes into it but sheesh what a missed opportunity.

There's a lot of voice about wanting to get a SYD-HKG overnight flight, but nobody has mentioned anything about the 7-9am return trip that plane would've had to make. They ain't going to fly an empty plane back...

If they actually decided to play nice with their OneWorld partners, there are potential connections that could take advantage of this flight. Plus who's to say it will be empty? how is it any different to running a day flight out of Sydney?

There's a CX flight at 10am so presumably there's a market there.

CX operates this flight, because it's required as a precursor to operate the overnight SYD-HKG. How else would the aircraft get to SYD? CX139 is always the most empty of the 4 HKG-SYD flights. Very rarely have I seen otherwise.

Also, as previously highlighted in this thread, the CX139 flight is mostly about ex-EU transits (lunchtime EU departures) and transits from other long haul destinations (morning US and Canada departures also possible). QF would not have sufficient O/D pax to make this flight sustainable and there is also limited feed from other oneworld carriers at that time of day. It's similar to why there's no daytime LAX-SYD etc.

I would also hazard a guess that QF is limited in increasing flights to HKG is two ways. Aircraft availability, looks like the A330 are freed up from reduced transcontinental flying and the limited number of slots available at HKG.
I do not know how bad the situation is at HKG but from what a friend of a friend said....meaning no validity at all;)....that even CX is limited in its expansion plans while QF wanted daily or at least 5 weekly at a different time but they could not get them.

There's an article in The Age (don't know why I am still subscribed to this whoever!) that has AJ talking about the number of available slots in HKG being very restricted. Maybe that's why they haven't done anything exciting with the timings? And it was only a few years ago that there way a night flight (and day return) ex MEL to HKG on QF.....

That flight was on its way to and from London. Quite different to a terminating flight in HKG

Yes which was my preferred LHR QF flight too.

Most recent trip was BA. Not QF/EK.

I accept as pointed out that slot availability et is no doubt a substantial factor.
