Gday

I am looking at a KUL- SIN- SYD redemption and according to the award chart it is 55000 miles in J one way. When i check availability for my required date on their website it has nothing but if i check both legs separately there is availability in each(the KUL- SIN leg is on Silkair with a 5 hour layover which is believe is permitted). Obviously I dont want to book two separate awards as it is alot more expensive. Is this simply a matter of calling the helpdesk to get it at the 55000 mile price or am i missing something?

Thanks!

Pele.

I had the same sort of issue a couple of weeks ago.

I had booked an award BNE-SIN-CNX in business for travel late July. Plans have changed and I now want to go to HKG instead before heading to SIN then BKK and then CNX. Don't ask.

When I was searching availability online I could go BNE-SIN-CNX and depart BNE on the 23:30 flight but there was no availability online for that flight for BNE-SIN-HKG and it would only offer the 9:00am departure ex-BNE leaving an overnight transit in HKG.

To cut a long story short I called the BNE office and managed to change the award to BNE-SIN-HKG for the flights I wanted but I was told I had to pay a change/re-issue fee. Not the end of the world. Anyway it worked out that I got a refund of ~AUD65 with the change fee included.

I would say it is a website glitch. Call them and explain the availability you see and they should be able to book it.

Gday

I called the helpdesk today and it is not a website glitch. I rang twice to make sure i got a consistent reason. Sure enough for non direct route's they have a 'quota' which is different from the quota of award seats on individual legs of the journey. To make things worse when i just rang the bloke to check availability he said there was none left for the SIN- SYD leg on the A380. I finished up with him and went online to check and there was still availability so i booked a seat for my wife and then went onto my account and there was none left! Bugger. Ended up having to book in the higher award class which is annoying but at the end of the day i am surprised there is any availability left for that time of year(first week of Jan). And this is our first flight on the A380 so that will be special.

The other thing i forgot to mention- the Singapore air mobile phone app was showing award availability that was not showing on the desktop site. Bizarre but potentially handy.

This is interesting. Previously the app had (famously) more availability... But they did a significant upgrade to it a couple of years ago and that all changed. Interesting to hear a report of this occurring again..!

Gday

As a further point of reference- the Virgin Velocity website shows availability on SIA from KUL all the way through to SYD that isnt available on the desktop site either. There are a lot of combinations of flights from KUL- SIN that form the first leg of my desired redemption and the Krisflyer website only lists about 6 options. The Velocity redemption is for a higher points amount but significantly lower(or possibly zero) taxes. Of course you must factor in the conversion ratio from one scheme to the other. At the end of the day this exercise has taught me there are at least four ways(telephone helpdesk, desktop site, mobile app, partner website) to skin a cat and that the help desk is not always the ultimate source of truth.

I think that the variances are intentional...it provides the gaming experience that makes frequent flyer programs so successful and addictive.

I doubt it's intentional but it sure is handy; managed to find a good Y multi-leg redemption when the desktop site only had >12 hour stopovers and the helpdesk could only find F!
