Just out of curiousity, checked flights from SFO-MEL, shows the following:

SFO-MEL QF74 ... J4 C0 D0

and

SFO-SYD QF74 ... J9 C0 D0
SYD-MEL QF74 ... J9 C9 D9

Why showing 9+ from SFO-SYD but only 4 from SFO-MEL? Would have thought if can sell seat to SYD, can sell it to MEL as well (not like say SYD-BKK-LHR where there would be careful yield management on the two sectors). Probably immaterial as if you delved into they would sell it to you anyway.

It's probably to do with that mystical process known as "Yield management".

I hazard a guess there are separate numbers of seats set aside on the aircraft in J for SFO-SYD and SFO-MEL with SFO-SYD having the most. Ont his particular flight most of the SFO-MEL J seats have been sold while there are still quite a few left for SFO-SYD. Now for the SYD-MEL sector, all the -SYD J PAX would have disembarked thereby freeing up those seats for further sale SYD-MEL.
